Please help me! my gerbil crawled into a didjeridoo (long hollow wooden instrument) and got stuck! we propped off the top and got him out after about 10 minutes and he was COMPLETELY black! im guessing there was a charcoal dust inside. he is usually a tan color in his fur. i washed him off with water and a bit of softsoap. he has a deep cut in both of his cheeks and is now acting shaky and otherwise normal and VERY slow. Still squeaking a bit cuz its hard for him to breathe. otherwise normal. How do i treat his cuts? is he going to die? do i leave him alone? PLEASE!!! i love him

  1. If you have a vet in your area that sees exotic pets, take him there.

Unfortunately not all vets see rodents.  If you are not so lucky, use some Neosporin on his cuts.  Its safe for animals.  Put him back in his cage with some clean water and his favorite food.  He MAY be shaken up from the incident.  Watch him closely throughout the night.

I would let him be for the most part.  Watch him carefully, but outside of putting Neosporin on his cuts, don't handle him too much.  You don't want to stress him any more than he already is.

  2. give the cut a wash with  a damp cloth and if the bleeding stops he should b e fine if not well you know gerbil don't have that much blood,

get him to a vet or anything soon,

  3. YOUR GERBIL SHOULD BE OK. WATCH HIM FOR A FEW MORE DAYS AND IF HE'S STILL ACTING "FUNNY" TAKE HIM TO THE VET. (mine got into a fight with it's mate, which is very rare and got cuts but was ok in about 4 days) I LOVE GERBILS, THEY MAKE SUCH GOOD PETS AND CONTRARY TO POPULAR BELIEF, THEY ARE VERY CLEAN ANIMALS AREN'T THEY?

  4. call vet

  5. take him to the vet asap

  6. Take him to a vet or an emergancy animal clinic!

  7. This is terrible news. Deep gashes on such a small animal are not to be taken lightly. You can try treating it yourself by keeping the area clean and protecting it with gauses, but if you say he's having difficulty breathing he may have more injuries.  Observe him for a bit and if he doesn't look like he's got his land legs back, take him the the vet quickly.

    Best wishes for your gerbil.

  8. go online and see if there are any hamster medicine that your hamster can use. ask the vet too. try to use water to clean his cheeks.( it may hurt) leave him for a while and see how he feels. and don't let him walking around like that anymore, he must be in a hamster ball form now on if he is outside.

  9. You need to get this little guy to a vet.  He could have many things wrong with him.

The charcoal is probably in his lungs, therefore he is having a hard time breathing.

The gashes can become infected and he could die of infection if not blood loss.

You CANNOT use anything around your house to treat wounds.  ESPECIALLY not Neosporin.

Also, make sure if he isn't dry yet from the washing, do not let him l**k himself very much.  The soft soap is not good for him.

    Good luck to you!
