URGENT! Ipod troubles please i really need help?

Question

my ipod is not being recognized by my laptop. It used to. I have it plugged now and it just has the menu screen showing on the ipod does this mean its charging? When i plug it in a little pop up says the usb device has malfunctioned and windows cant recognize it. Can anyone please tell me wats wrong and how i can fix it?
