Question:

URGENT! Virus . Can't activate Norton.

I accidently downloaded a virus which has screwed my mouse pointer up. It's flying all over the screen. I can't click on the icon to activate Norton, but I can use Start - Run

How do I activate Norton SCAN using Start - Run? I don't mean just Norton as that reqires the mouse to be used to click an on-screen button to start the scan which I can't do. How do I activate the ACTUAL scan just using the keyboard?

This is pretty urgent. I'm asking this on a public terminal and I only have about three quarters of an hour left. Please help.

  1. See if you can run your Norton software from safe mode.  Start your computer and press the F8 key.  Allow the system to load and then choose "Safe Mode".  After the system is up and running, you should be able to run Norton.

  2. Odds are that you didn't download a virus, you downloaded spyware -- something that Norton AV isn't going to be able to touch. You need to use the right tools for this job. I suggest SUPERantispyware and Malwarebytes anti-malware (see below).

Since your computer probably has a ton of infections you don't know about, here is my standard cleaning procedure:

NOTE: on badly infected computers, you may have to install and run the scans from safe mode. Some programs will be actively disabled or damaged by the infections. When this happens, just pick another cleaning program until you find one which isn't knocked out. Then reboot and try some of the others. Lather, rinse and repeat until you have a clean system.

How to start in safe mode:

    Visit http://www.majorgeeks.com

Download, install and run the following:

    (drive cleaner)

    http://majorgeeks.com/CCleaner_Slim_No_T...

ccleaner slim (removes junk and temp files so that the scans have fewer files to look through)

(anti-virus) Pick one, some infections disable cleaning programs, so try another until you can start removing the infections.

    Dr Web Cure it

    AVG

    AntiVIr

    Avast

If your wallpaper has been changed (and you can't change it back).

(anti-spyware) (This first group will detect and remove the worst infections. The 2nd group will clean up the stragglers).

    Superantispyware

    Malwarebytes Rouge Remover

    Malwarebytes anti-malware

    Threatfire

    spyware doctor starter edition

    ad-aware 2008

    spybot search and destroy

    Counterspy

    AVG anti-spyware

    Download and run combofix

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix...

Once you get the infections cleaned off, you have to repair the damage.

    Download, install and run

    http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4899.h...

    Dial-a-fix

Go through everything. This will fix a bunch of things that infections love to break. If you still have problems, (parts of windows is broken) you may need to do an Windows repair install or get some other tools to correct the changed settings. Tweak UI can be helpful (or dangerous in the wrong hands).

    Good luck

    LKB

  3. get anti-vir free

  4. type NAVW32 in your run box and hit enter

  5. try start...run ...norton or nortonav..if you are sucessful and norton comes up  use your alt,tab and arrow keys to move around to the start scan button enter after you've highlighted the start scan button and the scan should start.. you can also try starting your computer in safe mode

  6. First goto Clamwin and install Clamwin portable

    http://portableapps.com/apps/utilities/c...

This software allow you to install the anti-virus program on a USB drive.

    Update the anti-virus definition files.

Take this USB drive with Clamwin installed to your PC.

Boot up your PC in safe mode command prompt.

Plug in the USB drive and run Clamwinportable.exe using your keyboard command. Scan your PC memory for virus.

Then scan all your PC drives for viruses.

  7. You can theoretically avoid having to use the mouse completely.  Hit windows key to choose the start menu, use arrows to select.  You can also use the tab button to select clickable items.  Alt + F4 can be used to close the current window.  So, try using a combination of these to select your anti-virus and do a scan.

If you have vista, you can click the windows button, type in norton, then select.  Then use tab to choose to scan.

  8. Use the 'Tab' key and the Start Menu key on your keyboard to navigate to your web browser, and through the steps below:

    1) Download HijackThis from http://www.softpedia.com/get/Internet/Po... .

    2) Run the program, and select 'Do a System Scan and save a logfile'.

    3) Look in the list that appears in the program for anything unusual.  Depending on the virus, this could be a filename or a different in the program filename, etc.  For example, common viruses may capitalize the file extensions, such as 'explorer.EXE'.  Also check the filepath of the files to make sure they're pointing to legitimate files.

    3) If you suspect you've found the file, investigate.  Go to it's location, and hover over it by using the tab key to find it, then staying on it for awhile.  If nothing appears, use the right-click button on the keyboard (located between the right Alt and Ctrl buttons) and select 'Properties'.  You'll hopefully see a 'Last Updated' or 'Last Modified' date.  If it's recent and in an odd location/odd filename, it's a pretty safe bet it's related to the virus.

    4) Download a free anti-virus while Norton is dead.  Try downloading AVG from http://free.avg.com/ww.download-avg-anti... .

    5) Run AVG to confirm that file might be the infected file.

    6) If AVG found any viruses, take sufficient action as the program will explain to you by moving them to the Virus Vault or deleting them automatically.

    6) If you find the file/s are still there, more action will need to be taken.  In that case, reply in here and I'll outline some other steps you could take to removing the virus.

    7) If the infected file/s appear to be removed, run AVG again to double-check, then run HijackThis again.

    8) If it all looks good... there you have it!  If not, as mentioned above, reply in here and I'll reply as soon as I can.
