URGENT death in family need to renew passport

my grandfather in england passed away last night. my mother wants to go over for the funeral but her passport expired fifteen years ago. she is not an australian citizen. how do we go about renewing her passport? is there anyway we can do it quickly? any help at all would be appreciated. nothing i look up on net is helping.. thanks

Is she British then? Are you in Australia?

She'll need a British passport which she can get from the British embassy. It will take 25 days for a renewal via the British embassy but it also will take time for postage (pay express post and see if it is possible to pick up in Canberra). British passports need to go to the UK embassy in Canberra where they are processed. The Brits do not have a priority fee where the passport application can be expediated.

If your mother is an Australian Permanent Resident she may be able to try to get a Certificate of Identity with the Australian passport office as they may be able to issue one due to the urgency. Although it would take 10 days to process (and you would have to go to the passport office for the interview and request to pick it up for quicker times). Australia does have a priority fee but I believe this only extends to the Australian passports for Australian citizens not the Certificate of Identity.

Call 131 232 to see if you qualify but I don't know if they're open on Monday as it's a bank holiday.

Robert is correct to a degree. If your mother leaves she may require the Australian visa (as she is not a Australian citizen therefore not able to get a full Australian passport) to get back into the country easily and immigration can be tough.

get in touch with immigration, but be careful, a scottish lady went home for a holiday, she had lived in oz. raised a family and all that jazz, when she returned the oz. customs refused her entry. no oz passport
