We have in the past monthish just got two new guinea pigs.

They are both males, but the white one keeps like 'mounting' the black one. i dont gettit?

Also the thing im most worried abouttit?

, i put them out in a homemade run in the garden earlier today ( we are getting a proper one in a couple of days) and i saw a cat run by, i was soo worried and thought it might have killed the little guineas or something, they turn ou fine, but once i put them back in there little house (cage) i heard there teeth 'chattering' like clicking really quickly, as if they were shivering (they cant be cold its like 89 degrees) or scared.

I thought it was just the black one being scared of the white one (as he seems to be a bully hehe) But then i saw the white one doing the same thing!!

CAN YOU HELP!?!!

  1. For the mounting - they are displaying dominance

For the "chattering" it might mean they don't like each other, don't get along.

  2. both males and females mount guineas pigs even of the same s*x, just shows their in season, as for the teeth chattering, this is when they feel threatened

  3. The cat may have scared them, although I'm not sure if it's logical to assume the teeth chattering is the same as humans whose teeth sometimes chatter when we're scared...

I doubt they're cold, it may be a form of communication.

EDIT - A quick Google search turned up this:

Not liking another pig / Aggression! If your pig comes across another pig it doesn't like you will soon know about it ! Common signs are: ·

        * Fluffing out their hair (so it almost stands on end - this is to make them look bigger and more frightening) ·

        * They might yawn / open their mouths wide (this is to show off their teeth) ·

        * They will often raise their heads in their air at the other pig so they are both facing each other with their heads up. ·

        * They may raise themselves up on their back legs so they are ready to fight ! ·

        * They may pace their back legs from side to side (their legs will look stiff)

You will probably mostly see this when introducing new pigs or with a pair of male pigs - they give each other lots of warnings to try and avoid having a 'real' fight. Mostly they will settle down after lots of this behaviour but if they have got to the heads raised / teeth chattering stage keep a very very close eye on them as they are likely to fly at each other and can do a lot of damage - keep a towel and a water spray handy!

  4. OH MY GOSH I HAVE TO MALES AND THEY NEVER FIGHT THEY SLEEP IN THE SAME IGLOO JUST GET A ADULT MALE AND A BABY MALE MINE TALK ALOT TO

  5. 2 sometimes even 3 males can be housed together,as long as no females are present within smelling distance. the behaviour you are witnessing it them warning each other with teeth grinding, and the mounting behaviour is dominance. the more dominant pig will mount the less dominant pig, so he knows his place, sows will also do this,it is completely normal. as long as there is no real fighting/bloodshed they should be fine. sometimes castration can help but not often in guinea pigs.

as for the cat,yes cats can and will catch and kill a pig,we lost one when i first got pigs years ago, i saw the cat take it,by the time i got to the cat it had already killed my piggy. a fully enclosed piggy run is a must, good luck with your pigs x

  6. Two males should not be kept in the same quarters. They are displaying dominating behaviors. I would separate them immediately.

  7. They make they chattering noise all the time I use to have two and they did it as well its a form of communication between them and if there teeth are really long get them some wooden chew blocks and a salt wheel. As for the mounting thing they are just trying to show dominace. They can get rough with eachother so watch them and make sure they don't hurt eachother. If things get rough you need to separate them into different cages. Good Luck!!

  8. Haha mine do that! Its a dominance thing. I donth think they are trying to do "it"

  9. The one pig is mounting the other one because he is being territorial.  It is normal.  Don't let them run outside when it is 89 degrees.  That is way too hot.  I think that your piggy was chattering his teeth because he was scared and felt threatened.
