US Amateur Championship to be moved to the Riviera Country Club in 2017
The United States Golf Association (USGA) has announced to stage the 2017 edition of the US Amateur Championship at the Riviera Country Club, one of the prestigious golf clubs in the United States.
With the announcement, the Riviera CC will have the status of being listed among the very few venues to get the hosting privilege of the US Open, US Senior Open and US Amateur.
"The USGA is excited to bring the U.S. Amateur Championship to Riviera Country Club, returning our oldest championship to Southern California for the first time since 1976," said USGA Vice President and Championship Committee Chairman Thomas J. O'Toole Jr.
"Riviera has a rich and varied championship history and will become one of a select group of courses to host the U.S. Open, U.S. Senior Open and U.S. Amateur. Riviera has known great USGA champions in Ben Hogan and Hale Irwin, and we are confident the club
will stage a successful national amateur championship,” he said.
Riviera CC has the history of hosting the Northern Trust Open each year since 1973 except two years, 1983 and 1998.
In 1983, the Northern Trust Open was moved to the Rancho Park Golf Course in order to preserve the Riviera CC for the PGA Championship. In 1998, the tournament was moved to Valencia Country Club, as the US Senior Open was contested at the Riviera CC.
The club also has the status of hosting the 1992 Nissan Los Angeles Open when the 14-time major winner Tiger Woods made his debut on the PGA Tour as an amateur.
Ben Hogan, Hal Sutton and Hale Irwin won the 1948 US Open, 1983 PGA Championship and 1998 US Senior Open, respectively.
Now, Riviera will have the privilege of producing another winner of the amateur’s major championship. The tournament is scheduled for August 14 to 20, 2012.
The club is also going to host the NCAA Championships Division I golf championships in the last week of May this year.
This year, the US Amateur Championship will be held at the Cherry Hills Country Club in Colorado, where Kelly Kraft will be defending the title.
