Question:

US Army as Korean translator?

by  |  earlier

I want to join the army as a Korean translator, but on the GoArmy website it only lists middle east languages as being able to enlist for. Would I be able to enlist as an infantryman or intelligence analyst with Korean translator as a secondary MOS? I'd also like to go through Mountain Warfare School and/or Air Assault School, and then their South Korean equivalent. Thanks for the help.

  1. Do you speak, read and write Korean now?  If you score proficient on both the spoken and written tests you might be able to get it as a secondary MOS.  If not, there's little chance of the Army sending you to DLI for Korean at this time.

  2. Tell your recruiter you want to be in INSCOM and go to the Defence Language Institute in Monterey CA to learn Korean.  You will have to take a battery of tests before you enlist and if you score high enough on the language aptitude test you have a chance.  One thing though.  No matter what the recruiter tells you, they will send you to the school, but they will not guarantee the language you want.  Still a good choice for the service.  if you want to stay in a good career.  If you want out after four, NSA or CIA are always available.

  3. You didn't say if you already speak Korean.

To be a military linguist, you have to take and make a qualifying score on the DLAB test at meps.

What language you are trained in, is up to the Army, NOT YOU .

While you can go to the air assault school, you cannot get it in your enlistment contract.

Basicly your gonna have to be assigned to a post that has an air assault school.

Forget about going to foreign schools, that rarely happens for non special ops soldiers.
