US Cadets wins four gold medals 2011 Pan American Youth Championships: Fencing News
The 2011 Pan American Youth Championships festival started on May 27, at Zihuatanejo, Guerrero in Mexico. The American athletes won four gold medals on the first day event that started on May 28.
On second day of the festival, total six events were conducted between Y-10 category of boy and girls. The US Cadets won total 14 medals including four gold medals, three silver medals and seven bronze medals. Moreover, most of the US athletes were listed
in top ten fencers in each category.
United States’ 18-year-old Greta Candreva demonstrated amazing performances by winning the gold medal at Women’s Y-10 Foil event. US made a clean sweep in Women’s Foil category by winning all four medals of the event. Candreva, Alexandra Park, Delphine Devore
and Lauren Scruggs remained undefeated during their pool rounds. In quarter-finals, Candreva defeated Anabel Acurero; Devore defeated Mexican Lilith Escamilla while Scruggs defeated Mexican Yanell Esquivel. There were only US fencers left in the semi-final
round.
Candreva and Devore defeated her home country’s Park and Scruggs in the semi-final round and reached in the play-off round. Finally, Candreva beat down Devore and took the event of the day. Devore was honoured with a silver medal, while Park and Scruggs
were crowned with bronze medals. Mexican Acurero, Escamilla, Yanell and Paula Hool were placed in fifth and eighth positions, respectively.
The Mexican fencers grabbed all the top five spots in Women’s Y-10 Epee category. Mexican Karen Hernandez defeated her own country's Nathalie Romero to win the gold medal. Romero was able to win the silver medal of the day. Mexican Abigail Valdez and Scarlet
Canto, who were dropped in the semi-final round, took the bronze medal of the Epee event.
United States’ Scruggs won another bronze medal in Women’s Y-10 Sabre category. She lost to Acurero in the semi-final round. The gold medal was taken by the Mexican Cynthia Garcia, who defeated Acurero in the final. Acurero was crowned with silver medal
while another Mexican fencer, Tamara Gomez acquired bronze medal of the second day.
