My fiance is in Yongsan, Korea as a military police for the Army. We want to get married when I go over. What kind of visa do I need to apply for if we're not exactly married yet and how do I get a passport? How is Korea like? Is the housing expensive and what kind of job can I get over there.

  1. The first thing that needs to happen is for your fiance to go to his command and inquire about sponsorship for you.  If it's not available then wait until he gets back before you get married.  Without command sponsorship your life will be miserable and your access to base facilities severely limited.

I'll tell you in advance, command sponsorship is almost never available for tours of duty in Korea.

  2. (I) If you are not married, you can bring her here on fiancee visa. You will have to document your fiancee status by photos, affidavits and other things (proof of visit, stay, etc.). Once she is here on fiancee visa you will have to get married within 90 days. The visa petition will take about 6 months and it has to be filed in US.

(II) If you go there and get married, then you have two options.

    1. File visa petition for green card. You have 2 choices: (a) if you stay in Korea with your wife for over 3 months you can file there and get it approved right away. You should check with US Consulate. Not all consulates allow this. (b) You will have to come back and file visa petition in US, if option (a) is not available. With option (b) it will take about 8-12 months for the entire process to complete.

    2. File visa petition (same as in option 1(b) and then once you have receipt file for fiancee petition. There is fiancee visa available for spouses of US citizens to expedite the processing little bit. The processing takes about up to 5-6 months but your wife can come here little faster.Once she is here she will have to file for adjustment of status here- the process will take up between 8-12 months depending upon where you live. This option is exercised by people who just don't want to wait a day longer than they have to.

Hope it answers your question!! Good luck.
