Assuming that Barack Obama's birthplace, Hawaii, did not become a state in 1959, would he have been able to run for the presidency today?

  1. There is no requirement that somebody be born in a US state in order to be a 'natural born' US citizen.

    As long as you meet the requirements to be be a US Citizen 'by birth' you count as 'natural-born.'

    John Adams was born in Quincy Massachusetts, British America...

  3. There has been debate on this type of question before. Sen. Barry Goldwater was born in Arizona before it had become a state. The same question was asked, but in the end everyone assumed that it wasn't a problem and he kept on running for President.

    One day, the Supreme Court may have to rule on this.
