My plans are to become a foreign service officer- preferably a language interpreter/translator in Spanish and French,

and would like to know how much studies you would need. but what other careers are possible?

where does one begin?!

(abroad obviously, since US embassies and consulate offices don't exist in the US.)

  1. You have to take the foreign service officer exam, which tests you on a number of different topics related to the job.  It is offered once or twice a year at select cities across the US.   About 2-5% of those who take that exam are then selected for a day long oral exam, where you are tested with other applicants.  You have to have a clean record.  It is a very selective process, but you can make it if you have a well-rounded education.

Specifically, they test you on things such as geography, global affairs, US literature and history, and contemporary US culture.
