US Men’s quartet observes world season’s best in Lignano Sabbiadoro – Athletics news
With their winning performance at the Sport e Solidarieta International meeting, the Men’s title in 4x100m relay contest was won by the quartet of US athletes, who marked a world season’s best finish for stopping the clock in 37.90 seconds. The 22nd
edition of the event was staged in the Italian city of Lignano Sabbiadoro.
The meeting, which was held on a seaside resort area, also observed a meeting record in 100m sprints where Jamaican stars, Shelly Ann Fraser Pryce and Steve Mullings stole the limelight. The stellar performers, who were pre-favourites for the run, crossed
the finishing line in 11.11 seconds and 9.98 seconds, respectively.
Lingnano Sabbiadoro, the Italian city which is famous for extending favourable environment and technically sound facilities to athletes who look forward for some impeccable training before the big runs, has also been serving as a training base for big names
like Asafa Powell.
The city, which observed a new world season record in the relay meet by formidable names like Trell Kimmons, Justin Gatlin, Walter Dix and Michael Rodgers, has been particularly used for training athletes in this very discipline for the upcoming World Athletics
Championships to be held in Daegu.
Commenting upon his run, Gatlin, who was a runner-up in the 100m sprints at the US Championships said, “The changeovers were good. I felt a twinge in my hamstring but we ran a clean race. I enjoyed staying in Lignano and I would like to spend a period here
next year.”
While the US contingent cherished the performance of its men relay runners, it was left disappointed when the Women's relay squad, the pre-favourite for the run, could not even finish the race. Comprised of some big names from the American sprint field in
its blue team like Janeba Tarmoh, Shalonda Solomon, Lashauntea Moore and Alexandra Anderson, it was no less than a shame for the squad to leave the entire field for the rivals to contest and emerge at. Mikele Barber, Allyson Felix, Carmelita Jeter and Mershever
Myers were part of the red team, which also left fans disappointed.
