US Open 2010, Federer, Venus, Clijsters to begin action today
Last year’s United States Open winner, Kim Clijsters, a sixteen-time major champion, Roger Federer, as well as fourth ranked women’s tennis ace, Venus Williams, will provide the opening day fireworks at the US Open 2010.
The Belgian second seeded professional tennis player, Kim Clijsters, who has so far made her way into a total of two finals at Flushing Meadows, will face Greta Arn, a 104th ranked player from Hungary.
The Swiss tennis master, Roger Federer, will start his quest for a seventh United States Open final in a row and his sixth trophy in last seven years on the hard courts of the Flushing Meadows against Brian Dabul, a 94th ranked tennis player from Argentina.
The twenty-nine year old Fed Express was taken down by another Argentine opponent, Juan Martin Del Potro, in his previous season’s United States Open final. However, Del Potro is not participating in this year’s event as a result of his wrist injury.
The current hard court Australian Open winner, Roger Federer, has recently answered skpetics, who said that his declining period has started. They said his appearance in twenty-three finals was concluded at Roland Garros by Robin Soderling who got the better of Federer in their quarterfinal clash. However, the former World number one has won the ATP Cincinnati Masters tennis tournament just a few days ago after defeating Andy Murray in straight sets.
"At times, I take it as a complement," Roger said. "I am number two in the world at the moment and won a Grand Slam title earlier this season so you can’t take it seriously to be honest. Nobody can win twelve championships every year. That’s obvious for me. I spoiled myself by actually performing quite well. If it’s two, three or five, it's still a good year depending on how good you are playing and how well you are growing as a player.”
The third seeded American, Venus Williams, a seven-time major winner with United States Open trophies back in 2000 as well as in 2001 will play her first match against the sixty-five ranked Italian tennis opponent, Roberta Vinci. Venus succeeded in their previous clash in this season’s third round at Miami.
The American’s younger sister, the top ranked tennis player from the women’s side, Serena Williams is not participating in this year’s United States Open tennis tournament as a result of her foot injury. The world number one Serena Williams won the hard court Australian Open as well as the grass court Grand Slam title this year however faced a lot of injury problems throughout the season as well.
With Serena William’s absence at Flushing Meadows this year, one of the line judges she yelled at during her last year’s match, Shino Tsurubuchi, will be back on the sidelines among the officials of the match at this season’s United States Open tennis tournament.
In a semi final battle against the Belgian tennis ace, Kim Clijsters, the American Serena was called due to a foot fault by Tsurubuchi, who approached one of the umpires to report a code violation at Flushing Meadows.
Tsurubuchi this year will rotate between women’s and men’s clashes like other line judges at the United States Open tennis tournament.
In some other matches on Monday, the thirty-two seeded tennis ace, Lleyton Hewitt will take on French opponent Paul-Heri Mathieu. The ninth seeded Andy Roddick will meet Stephane Robert in his opening match of the tournament.
