US Open 2010: Elena Baltacha defeats Petra Martic, Venus advances
The British tennis player, Elena Baltacha, got off to a flying start with an impressive 6-2 6-2 win over Petra Martic on the opening day of the United States Open tennis tournament on Monday.
Two months after being defeated at the grass court Grand Slam, Wimbledon, the number one British tennis ace from the women’s side, concluded the first set in just about thirty minutes at Flushing Meadows.
The twenty-seven year old continued her dominance throughout the match with the help of her serve and quickly finished off the clash in a time period of just sixty-five minutes.
The fifty-seven ranked Baltacha, as a result of this victory will next meet the twenty-seven seeded, Petra Kvitova, in the second round of the US Open 2010 in New York.
Elena is targeting a spot in the world’s top fifty rankings and surely has bright chances of fulfilling her dream soon considering her Monday’s clash at the US Open 2010 in New York.
"I played highly positive in my today’s clash and my only strategy throughout the match was that I kept her under pressure and side by side went on playing some good shots as well. I have a strong faith in my own talent and so I didn’t even think of giving up at any stage of the today’s match at the Flushing Meadows”, she said.
The top ranked tennis player from Great Britain was featuring in the main draw on the very first occasion in her career. She was up against an opponent, ranked number thirty-one in the world, who she had lost to in the first round of Wimbledon this season at the All England Club.
The Scot stated that it was a good opportunity to take revenge for her Wimbledon defeat and she actually did well to knock her down in the opening day on court seventeen at Flushing Meadows.
The first set of yesterday’s clash that highlighted a total of two breaks concluded in just thirty-five minutes on Monday.
"Losing to her at the grass court Grand Slam tournament was highly tough to accept as I was just two points short of victory in the end. I thought, that I was through, however, out of the blue, I was 5-3 down during the third set that was really difficult for me to believe”, said Elena.
She further added, "That defeat was extremely hard for me in the end and there were a couple of things to get over after that clash, however, I did manage to move on successfully. I always try to look for reasons and dig out the causes of my defeat in every single match that I play and I did the same after my grass court Grand Slam loss as well. I have learned a lot from that loss which actually helped me a great deal in my today’s clash as well”.
As a result of this victory, Baltacha will next take on Kvitova for a spot in the third round of the United States Open tennis tournament in New York. After the Czech Republic tennis player defeated her compatriot opponent Lucie Hradecka in a total of two sets. The final match score was 6-4 7-5.
In other action on Monday, the fourth ranked American tennis star, Venus Williams, also won her opening round match after defeating her Italian foe Roberta Vinci in a total of two sets on Monday. The final match score was 6-4, 6-1. As a result of this victory, Venus has reached the second round of the United States Open tennis tournament 2010 in New York.
