The Australian, who captured the trophy back in 2001, was kicked out by his French tennis opponent Mathieu on the very first occasion in the opening round in New York. Hewitt after the match said,
"I still believe I have enough room for improvement in my game and I will surely work on it. Even when I play at my very best like back in June when I defeated Roger Federer and won the title, i still feel that my game needs to improve in order to play such matches on consistent basis”.
As far as the two time semi-finalist, Nikolay, is concerned, he had no problems in defeating his American opponent Russell in a total of three sets yesterday. The final match score was 6-4 6-1 6-3. The Russian was sidelined for a total of three months back in March this season due to his wrist injury and since then Nikolay has triumphed in back-to-back clashes on just a single occasion in his career.
“I am not sure about my physical fitness at the moment, however, one thing is for sure that I was more confident and used to play more strongly prior to my injury. I don’t feel like I am a top ten tennis contender at the moment. I can be sure about my physical condition only after playing some more matches”, said Nikolay after the match.
Meanwhile, birthday boy Andy Roddick, also celebrated his 28th birthday with a 6-3 6-2 6-2 win over his French opponent, Stephane Robert, and he will next face either Janko Tipsarevic, who got the better of Olivier Rochus in a four setter clash. The final match score was 4-6 7-5 7-6 (7-0) 6-2.
"I am glad that I won my today’s match”, said Andy after his clash at Arthur Ashe Stadium. "Conditions are quite tough out there and you have to deal with the wind carefully”.
The twenty-eight year old American is trying to regain the form that saw him reach the final of the Indian Wells back in March and hammered down the current number one Rafael Nadal as well as Tomas Berdych on his way to the Miami trophy during the month of April.
"It's all about playing strongly and focusing on your game throughout the match”, said Roddick, who served at a percentage of around sixty-eight.
Other straight sets winners included the twenty-two seed, Juan Carlos Ferrero, as well as the eleventh seeded, Marin Cilic. Thirteenth seeded, Jurgen Melzer, as well as the seventeenth seeded, Gael Monfils, both advanced into the next rounds at the US Open 2010 on Monday.
