US Open 2010: Indestructible Kim Clijsters successfully defends her singles’ title
It seems as if Kim Clijsters had just the right amount of grab on her 2009 U.S. Open Women's singles title, as the professional went on to clinch the 2010 U.S. Open title also defeating Russia's Vera Zvonareva, in what appeared to have been the shortest match of the championship. The final lasted a crispy 59 minutes.
Clijsters annihilated Zvonareva, two sets in a row based upon her 6-2, 6-1 win. The Russian proved incapable of leveling herself with Kim as she seemed to have been struggling right from the start. Much to her dismay, her exertion didn't get her far.
Seeded no. 2 at the tournament, Clijsters had earlier defeated America's Venus Williams in a three set semi-final to proceed to the final. Upon being defeated 6-4 in the first set, Kim responded with a 7-6 win in the second set. Furthermore, the Belgian triumphed by taking over the third set as well by six games to four. As for Venus, she stood defeated on home-ground.
Prior to her semi-final win, Clijsters had eliminated Australia's Samantha Stosur in the quarter-final of 2010 U.S. Open Women's singles draw. The professional took the first set six games to four while Stosur managed to take the second set 7-6 based on winning the tie-breaker. The third set went in favor of Kim as she took the set six games to three, to send Samantha home.
Earlier, the Belgian had announced her retirement from the sport in 2007. After tragically ending her relationship with the Australian tennis player and fiancé, Lleyton Hewitt in October 2004, Clijsters tied the knot again with the American basketball player Brian Lynch in July, 2007. As Clijsters’ retirement was based upon her starting a family life, she gave birth to a baby girl Jada Ellie on 27th February 2008.
However, on 26th March 2009, almost two years after her retirement, Kim conveyed her thoughts of returning for the WTA summer hard court season. Much to everyone's surprise, the unseeded, wild card entrant, Mommy-Clijsters made history by taking the 2009 U.S. Open title after defeating Denmark's Caroline Wozniacki in straight sets.
Meanwhile, the American born rapper, Lil' Wayne had also predicted that Clijsters would win the 2010 U.S. Open Women's singles final.
