US Open 2010: Jelena Jankovic ousted, Caroline Wozniacki and Maria Sharapova advance
The fourth-seeded tennis player, Jelena Jankovic was kicked out of the United States Open tennis tournament 2010 after her third-round defeat at the hands of Kaia Kanepi in New York.
The 25-year-old Serbian struggled right from the start of the match at the Flushing Meadows and Kanepi took full advantage of the situation and claimed a 6-2 7-6 (7-1) victory in the end.
The top-seeded Danish tennis star, Caroline Wozniacki in her match also got the better of Chan Yung-Jan comfortably in a total of two sets. The final match score was 6-0 6-1. As a result of this victory, Caroline will next meet the 2006 US Open winner Maria Sharapova in the fourth-round of the United States Open tennis tournament in New York. The Russian made her way into the round four at the Flushing Meadows after thrashing out Beatrice Capra in a total of two sets. The final match score was 6-0 6-0.
Caroline, a United States Open runner-up back in 2009, was quite satisfied with her performance at the Louis Armstrong Stadium.
"I really enjoyed the way I played in the windy conditions. As far as my next round opponent Maria Sharapova is concerned, she is a really good tennis contender and I am sure it is going to be a tough clash,” said Caroline after the match.
The fourteen-seeded Russian sensation Maria Sharapova, while commenting on her match against Caroline said, "She is perhaps going through the best patch of her tennis career. She is playing even better than the last year when she reached the final here in New York. It will definitely be a tight clash; however, I am all set and looking forward to it.”
As far as Jelena is concerned, her search for her maiden major trophy continues and the Serbian never looked likely to advance in the tough conditions.
Kanepi easily won the first set as Jelena failed to find her form and the thirty first seeded took complete charge of the game from there onwards.
In spite of the fact that Jelena managed to grab next three games in a row, Kanepi proved stronger in the end.
"I had a tough time serving in the wind, as it was not easy to hit the ball on the court. However, my foe handled the situation better than I did and thus rightly deserves the victory,” said Jelena after the match.
The 25-year-old Kanepi, who made her way into the quarterfinal rounds of the grass court Grand Slam championship this summer, will next meet Yanina Wickmayer from Belgium, in the fourth round of the United States Open tennis championship 2010 in New York.
The fifteen-seeded Wickmayer, at last dismissed her Swiss tennis opponent Patty Schnyder, in a time period of over two hours on the court. The final match score was 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, 7-6 (8-6).
Vera Zvonareva from Russia also managed to beat Alexandra Dulgheru in a total of two sets. The final match score was 6-2 7-6 (7-2), whereas Svetlana Kuznetsova turned out to be the winner in an all-Russian clash versus Maria Kirilenko.
Svetlana, as a result of this victory will next meet a Slovakian tennis player Dominika Cibulkova, who has reached the fourth round of the United States Open tennis tournament 2010 after dismissing Lourdes Dominguez Lino in a total of two sets. The final match score was 6-0 6-1.
Dominguez Lino, who hammered down Heather Watson on her way into the main draw, was outlasted as Cibulkova progressed to face either Svetlana Kuznetsova or Maria Kirilenko.
