US Open 2010: Kaia Kanepi and Dominika advances into the quarters
Kaia Kanepi defeated Yanina Wickmayer in the fourth round of the United States Open tennis tournament 2010 on Monday. The final score read 0-6, 7-6 (2) and 6-1. Kaia, as a result of this victory, has reached the quarter-final round of the year’s final Grand Slam in New York.
“She performed really well after the second set of the match. Although, I won the first set but couldn’t dominate afterwards. She bounced back quite well and in spite of the fact that I had chances in the second and third set as well, but sadly I didn’t avail them in the end,” said Wickmayer after the match.
Fifteen seed Yanina was up by a break during the second set however she couldn’t win in the end. Kaia broke back and won the battle in the end.
“I was already down in the first set so I had nothing more to lose. Therefore, I simply went for a powerful serve,” said Kanepi after booking her spot in the quarter-finals of the United States Open.
Kaia had never made it past the third round at Flushing Meadows before this season. No Estonian player has ever made it thus far at the US Open till date.
Kanepi however lost the quarterfinals at the French Open in 2008 as well as Wimbledon this season. She upset fourth seeded opponent, Jelena Jankovic in the third round in New York.
As a result of her recent victory, Kaia Kanepi will now face seventh seed Vera Zvonareva in the quarterfinal round in New York.
Yanina had just committed a total of 5 unforced errors during the first set while 37 in the last two on Monday. The 20-year-old tennis sensation from Belgium has gone past the fourth round in any major even since her semi-final run at the United States Open in New York last year.
“She was smashing very hard and across the lines,” Kanepi said while discussing Yanina’s game during the first set. “Therefore, everything simply worked for her at that time. In my opinion, I didn’t play bad even during the first set. I only played a bit slower in comparison to her aggressive game which did the trick for her in the end.”
In other action on Monday, the two- time Grand Slam winner Svetlana Kuznetsova was upset by her Slovakian tennis foe Dominika Cibulkova in the fourth round of the United States Open in a total of two sets. The final score read 7-5 and 7-6 (4).
Svetlana double faulted on a total of ten occasions in her match against world number 45, Dominika Cibulkova in New York.
Dominika has made her way into the quarter-final round at the Flushing Meadows for the very first occasion. Her best major result so far has been her semi-final run at the clay court French Open competition back in 2009.
Eleventh seed Svetlana on the other hand captured the French Open in 2009 as well as the United States Open in 2004.
Dominika has only won 2 matches while losing 8 against top fifteen contenders this year and both victories came versus Svetlana.
In the men’s draw, fifth seed Robin Soderling has also reached the quarter-final round of the United States Open 2010 after getting the better of Albert Montanes in a total of four sets on Monday. The final match score was 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-3.
The Swede will now meet Roger Federer in the quarters who defeated Jurgen Melzer in straight sets on Monday. The final match score was 6-3 7-6 (7-4) 6-3.
