US Open 2010: Kim Clijsters and Venus Williams power into fourth round
Reigning US Open Champion Kim Clijsters defeated Petra Kvitova in the third round of the United States Open in a total of two sets in New York on Friday. The final match score was 6-3, 6-0.
Clijsters did not start the match in an ideal manner, missing the first three games to Wimbledon semi-finalist Petra Kvitova. However, she then grabbed 12 points in a row to make her way into the final sixteen at Flushing Meadows.
"A battle like this one satisfies me more at the end of the day as I know that I have defeated a good tennis opponent without even playing at my very best,” an excited Belgian opined after the match.
As a result of this victory, Kim Clijsters will now take on Ana Ivanovic in the fourth round of the United States Open. The Serbian ace powered her way into the fourth round after getting the better of French tennis foe Virginie Razzano in a two set game. The final match score was 7-5, 6-0.
Third seeded Venus Williams also managed to win her clash against Mandy Minella on Friday after losing her first two service games in New York. The final match score was 6-2, 6-1.
Venus, contesting in her first championship since her quarter-final exit at Wimbledon, initially struggled in the match. However, she soon took charge of the match as it progressed. After gaining some composure at last in the sixth game, the fourth ranked American managed to control her errors and powered through to a victory over Mandy with a lot of ease.
Israeli tennis player Shahar Peer, who has lost to Venus on three occasions already this year, will face the American once again after her two set win over Flavia Pennetta from Italy. The final match score was 6-4, 6-4.
Fifth seeded Samantha Stosur as well as the sixth seeded Francesca Schiavone also reached the next round of the United States Open 2010.
Australian tennis ace Samantha Stosur started the day at the Louis Armstrong Stadium with a comfortable 6-2, 6-3 victory over her Italian tennis foe, Sara Errani in a time period of one hour and 20 minutes.
In her last six appearances at Flushing Meadows, Stosur had never made it to the third round. Nevertheless, she has made her way into the quarters or better in nine out of ten previous tournaments that she has played in.
As a result of this victory, Samantha Stosur will now meet 12th seed Elena Dementieva in the next round of the United States Open. Elena advanced after drubbing Daniela Hantuchova from Slovakia in a two setter clash. The final match score was 7-5, 6-2.
Daniela was initially leading the opening set with 5-2. However she then lost eleven of the next thirteen games, including a total of five in a row, as the Slovakian’s touch totally collapsed.
Elena, who fired a total of eighteen winners said, “I didn’t not want to lose that opening set, I was just trying really hard for every single point and that in the end proved to be the key factor in the match. After winning the first set, I felt extremely motivated and my confidence level also increased to a great extent. I played the second set much more confidently and aggressively and thus won the match in the end.”
French Open winner Schiavone defeated twenty nine seed Alona Bondarenko from Ukraine in a total of two sets. The final match score was 6-1, 7-5.
Her reward is a next round clash with Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova from Russia who got past Gisela Dulko in a two setter clash. The final match score was 6-1, 6-2.
