US Open 2010: Kim Clijsters vs. Greta Arn
Kim Clijsters, the 2009 United States Open champion believes that her experience from last year is enough for her to successfully defend the U.S. Open title at Flushing Meadows this time round.
Clijsters defeated Caroline Wozniacki to clinch the U.S. Open in 2009 after making a comeback to the professional game last year.
Second seed Kim Clijsters will play her opening match against Greta Arn on Monday which is going to be a tough challenge for the Belgian ace without any doubt.
"My attitude as well as approach is not so distinct in contrast to the previous season,” said Kim.
"Off course, last season had several more unanswered questions however I think this season I am clearer about my target and know what I want to do and I will definitely try to play even better than the last year. As far as the pressure is concerned, I don’t feel any pressure at all. However, in my opinion, pressure is good as it motivates you to play well. Therefore, I am extremely happy and excited to be back at the Flushing Meadows and all set to defend my title,” added Clijsters.
Kim made a comeback to the sport after her retirement back in 2007 that later proved to be a moving moment. Her eighteen-month-old daughter Jada was one of the spectators last year to see her mother win a Grand Slam tournament when she got the better of Caroline in straight sets.
The modest Belgian however fully understands the ability of world number two Caroline Wozniacki. Kim believes that she deserves to be the top seed in the absence of injured Serena Williams.
"She off course deserves to be seeded number one. Her accuracy is one of her strengths. In my opinion her movement, judgement as well as placement are few things that speaks high of the talent of the 2010 Pilot Pen winner, Caroline Wozniacki,” added Clijsters.
Clijsters further said, “In spite of the fact that she is so young and yet has not experienced much in the game of tennis, she is playing extremely well which is highly appreciating. She knows well how to tackle lengthy matches. All she needs to do at the moment is to play a bit more aggressively which will help her in taking off the pressure.”
Kim suffered a hip injury earlier this month at the Rogers Cup in Montreal. However, she insists that she is all set for her opening match against Arn on Monday, which will begin at 1300 local time.
"I certainly have no doubts as far as my form at the United States Open tennis tournament is concerned,” she said. "I will probably have strapping on my leg however that does not mean that I will not be perfectly fit.”
Venus Williams will also play her opening match on Monday against Roberto Vinci at the Arthur Ashe Stadium at 1900 local time.
Roland Garros Champion Francesca Schiavone and fifth seed Samantha Stosur will also begin action on Monday.
British ace Elena Baltacha will also start her campaign versus Petra Martic from Croatia on Monday on court number seventeen at Flushing Meadows in New York.
