US Open 2010: Maria Sharapova narrowly wins her first round match
The Russian professional tennis player from the women’s side, Maria Sharapova won her first round match of the United States Open tennis tournament after beating her Australian foe, Jarmila Groth in a total of three sets on Tuesday. The final match score was 4-6, 6-3, 6-1.
The fourteen seeded Sharapova after the match said, “What matters the most for me at the end of the day is that despite struggling I won the clash. I am aware of the fact that I am not playing my best tennis over the last few years and I am glad that still I came out to triumph and at times it is more important than anything else as you are giving yourself an opportunity to once again battle on the court for the next match. I will definitely work on my weaknesses and will try to play better in my next match at the United States Open tennis tournament 2010 in New York.”
Groth smashed a total of fourteen double-faults, including one on the last point during the second set of the match on Tuesday. She blasted a total of twenty four winners to nineteen for Maria, and committed forty eight errors to a total of seventeen for the Russian.
“She was firing right from the start of the match and didn’t provide me with a lot of chances. However I just stayed focused and as I was not ready to give up till the end,” added Sharapova.
Maria has never lost earlier than the second round at the United States Open tennis tournament in her last seven appearances at the Flushing Meadows. However, the Russian also has not surpassed the third round in New York ever since grabbing the trophy back in 2003. She lost at that stage back in 2007 as well as in 2009 and skipped the championship back in 2008 shortly before suffering a shoulder injury.
The Russian sensation made adjustments to her service motion after undergoing a surgical treatment, then skipped almost two months this year as a result of her elbow injury. However, she has been playing quite well over the last few weeks, having reached the title rounds of two summer hard court championships.
Sharapova just double-faulted on a total of two occasions on Tuesday and it was Jarmila who donated points in the end as a result of shaky serving. She played a better game after the first set of the match and then never looked back until winning the clash at the Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York.
In the men’s draw, the 2007 US Open finalist Novak Djokovic also won his first round match of the United States Open tennis tournament after getting the better of Viktor Troicki in a total of five sets. The final match score was 6-3, 3-6, 2-6, 7-5, 6-3.
Top seeded tennis player, Rafael Nadal also did well to get past his ninety three ranked tennis foe Teymuraz Gabashvili in a three setter clash on Tuesday night. The final match score was 7-6 (4), 7-6 (4), 6-3.
“My serve did the trick in the end and helped me a great deal in winning the match,” said Nadal after the match on Tuesday.
Under the sizzling heat earlier, Viktor and Djokovic fought for more than three hours in the first round of the United States Open tennis tournament in New York. The third seeded Serbian after the match said, “It is quite frustrating in the end when you don’t feel great in terms of physical fitness and your foe takes full advantage of the situation.”
Mardy Fish as well as James Blake also won their respective matches of the United States Open tennis tournament on Tuesday.
