The champ Spaniard is battling hard to clutch his first ever Grand Slam title of the year. In his recent match at the US Open 2010, the world number one Rafael Nadal brushed away his Uzbek veteran rival Denis Istomin after a challenging contest.
The three setter match turned out to be a ruthless and relentless battle, with Istomin giving a strong challenge to Nadal, as he is currently enjoying the top of his game. But still, Nadal once again showed his class and firmly grasped the tie-break point during the second set. He used his experience against the twenty three year old in the third set and made the victory almost impossible for him.
The world number 39, Denis Istomin is no doubt showing his best form and marvelous talent at present. It is to be remembered that before this match also, the champ Spaniard had suffered a hard challenging battle from Istomin at the Queen’s. During yesterday’s match, Nadal seemed to have some issues with his serve as he wasn’t able to serve well. After gaining two points in the 5th game, Nadal saw himself cruising to grasp another set by getting the break point.
He gained confidence with every break point that made him experiment more aggressive and outrageous shots. Nadal’s pressure seemed a bit too much for the tennis ace from Uzbekistan and at the end of a stamina throbbing match, Nadal was able to conquer victory. While talking to the media after his win, Nadal admitted that the match was truly a tough challenge for him but he has gained a lot of confidence with his performance in it.
He said that Istomin is a very talented player who has a very remarkable capability of producing outrageous shots. He added that the Uzbek is currently enjoying his good playing form as he had a very good tournament recently which has given him confidence and that is why his game has improved a lot. He further added that winning such crucial battles gives a player boost for the upcoming fixtures.
The world number 1 Spaniard will now face the unseeded but talented, Gilles Simon during the third round. Meanwhile, while looking at other big names participating in the US open 2010, one cannot ignore the presence of the Argentinean, David Nalbandian. He just recovered from his hamstring injury and is now gaining confidence by thrashing every opponent, mercilessly.
Nalbandian will face Fernando Verdasco in his upcoming match. The former world no. 3 recently told the media that he is feeling quite well and cannot wait to get on the court. He added that he is well aware of Verdasco’s abilities and he will try his best to give him a tough time.
