US Open 2010: Rafael Nadal and David Nalbandian advance in New York
The top-seeded Spaniard, Rafael Nadal has made his way into the third round of the United States Open tennis tournament 2010 after defeating Denis Istomin in a total of three sets on Friday. The final match score was 6-2 7-6 (7-5) 7-5.
The 24-year-old Rafa won the opening set in a ruthless manner and at last subdued Denis with a late break in the decisive set of the match in New York.
The Uzbek had unnerved Rafael in their last clash at Queen’s and he proved equally stubborn on the Arthur Ashe Stadium. It looked as if the top-ranked player in the world may have things on his way, as he served out the first set of the match in a forceful fashion after breaks in the seventh as well as the fifth game on Friday.
However, Nadal was stretched all the way before the Spaniard could claim the ease of a two-set cushion. Istomin did well in a sense that he did not allow the top-seed to win the match in two sets. His explosive shot-making bothered Nadal for some time during the match.
In another action on Friday, the Argentinean tennis player David Nalbandian has managed to surpass his French tennis foe, Florent Serra with a comfortable three-setter victory at the Flushing Meadows. The final match score was 7-5 6-4 6-2.
David has not been considered one of the favourites to win the title at the Flushing Meadows. However, the 33-year-old Nalbandian has managed to beat a couple of top-ranked players after coming back from injury this year including Robin Soderling, Maran Cilic as well as David Ferrer. He also won the Legg Mason Tennis Classic tournament held in Washington, after making his return on the tour.
Florent posed an early threat, as he managed to take a quick lead of 2-0 in the opening set on Friday; however the sixty six ranked tennis player faded out of the clash from that stage on.
"I am feeling quite healthy at the moment. I didn’t feel fatigued or exhausted in today’s clash. All I need to do at the moment is to keep believing in my game, if I wish to triumph in the upcoming matches of the United States Open tennis tournament,” said David after his victory.
Ryan Harrison, a qualifier from the United States of America in his yesterday’s clash was toppled by Sergiy Stakhovsky on the Louis Armstrong Stadium in a five-setter epic match. The final match score was 6-3 5-7 3-6 6-3 7-6 (8-6). Sergiy concluded the battle in a time period of four hours and thirteen minutes.
“Off course, I am not the happiest man in the world at the moment. However, as far as the overall experience of playing at the Flushing Meadows is concerned, it was really wonderful. I have learnt a lot by contesting in New York and hopefully it will help me a lot in improving my game and my world ranking in the future as well. My target is to reach the top-ten ranking by the Association of tennis professionals. And I am pretty much sure that I can reach there, provided that I keep on working hard and improving my game after every single match and championship,” said the American after his defeat.
Another local tennis player, John Isner performed above average to book his place in the third round of the United States Open tennis tournament with a four set victory over Marco Chiudinelli on the fifth day in New York. The final match score was 6-3 3-6 7-6 (9-7) 6-4.
The twelfth-seeded Russian Mikhail Youzhny will be up against John Isner in the third round of the US Open 2010 after brushing aside Dudi Sela from Israel in a four-setter clash. The final match score was 6-1 6-3 4-6 6-3.
In another five-set clash, Gilles Simon from France managed to upset the twenty nine seeded German Philipp Kohlschreiber, in a total of five sets. The final match score was 4-6 6-3 1-6 6-1 6-3.
