US Open 2010: Robin Soderling, Novack Djokovic and Vera Zvonareva cruise into the quarters
The Swedish tennis player, Robin Soderling has made his way into the quarter final round of the United States Open tennis tournament 2010 after beating his Spanish tennis foe, Albert Montanes in a total of four sets. The final match score was 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-3.
He smashed a total of fifteen aces in beating the world number 21 Montanes on Monday. The 2010 French Open runner-up will next meet Roger Federer in the quarter final round of the United States Open tennis tournament in New York, for a semi-final berth in the year’s final major.
The fifth seeded Robin was defeated by Federer in the quarterfinal of the US Open back in 2009 and the Swede has so far lost on twelve occasions out of his thirteen clashes against the sixteen time major winner, Roger Federer.
However, Soderling won their last meeting at Roland Garros in the French Open tennis tournament this season to snap Roger’s run of twenty three major semi-final matches.
The third seeded Novak Djokovic, has also reached the quarter final round of the United States Open tennis tournament after beating Mardy Fish in a total of three sets on Monday. The final match score was 6-3, 6-4, and 6-1.
The Serbian will next meet Gael Monfils for a place in the semi-final round of the U.S Open in New York. Monfils has made his way into the quarters after getting the better of his compatriot fellow Richard Gasquet in a three-setter clash. The final match score was 6-4, 7-5, and 7-5.
The American tennis player, Mardy Fish after the match said, “Novak played really well today. He didn’t allow me to come back in the game in spite of the fact that I had chances to return and, thus he rightly deserved the victory.”
Djokovic, after the match while commenting on his performance said, “I am extremely glad with the way I played in today’s match. It feels great to reach the later stages of the tournament, as it gets harder and harder with every single match at the Flushing Meadows.”
Gael is 0-4 versus Novak, however, managed to push him to a total of five sets in the first round at the United States Open tennis tournament back in 2005, to three sets in the quarter final round at the Olympic Games back in 2008, and into a third-set tie-breaker before skipping previous season’s indoor finals in Paris.
"I am all set and looking forward to take revenge from Novak, as he defeated me at home. I know he is playing quite well at the moment and his form and rhythm is too good to knock him down easily on the court. However, I have no doubts on my abilities as well, and this time I will not miss the chance of beating him in straight sets,” said Monfils after his match in New York.
In the women’s side, the grass court Grand Slam finalist, Vera Zvonareva from Russia outlasted the world number 38, Andrea Petkovic from Russian in the fourth round of the United States Open tennis tournament 2010 on Monday. The final match score was 6-1, 6-2. As a result of this victory, the Russian has made her way into the quarter final round of the United States Open tennis championship in New York.
The seventh-seeded Vera dominated the match right from the start and was broken just once during the second set of the match at the Flushing Meadows. The Russian finished off the clash with a forehand return winner.
Vera made her way into the final of the major event on the very first occasion at Wimbledon this season. However, she was taken down by the world number one, Serena Williams in straight sets.
Next up for Vera is a clash against the world number thirty one, Kaia Kanepi from Estonia.
