US Open 2010: Robin Soderling moves on, Peng Shuai also advances
The Swedish professional tennis player Robin Soderling has made his way into the third round of the United States Open tennis tournament 2010 after beating his American foe, Taylor Dent in a three-setter clash on Thursday. The final match score was 6-2, 6-2, and 6-4. The fifth-seeded Robin concluded his yesterday’s battle in a time period of just ninety two minutes at the Flushing Meadows. He lost just two games to Taylor, when the two of them met each other four months ago in the second round match of the clay court French Open tennis tournament.
In contrast to his previous five set win against Andreas Haider-Maurer, a qualifier from Australia in the first round of the United States Open tennis tournament, Robin looked quite convincing in his yesterday’s clash against Taylor in New York. He blasted a total of thirty two winners, fourteen aces and committed only eleven unforced errors.
The 26-year-old Robin recorded his best result at the Flushing Meadows back in 2009, when he made his way into the quarterfinal round, however, lost to Federer in straight sets. The Swede has also performed quite well in all the previous three Grand Slam tournaments this season. The Tibro native did well to make his way into the final of the French Open for the second consecutive time, followed by his first-ever Wimbledon quarters appearance, where he was defeated by Rafael Nadal.
As a result of this victory, Robin Soderling will take on the Dutch tennis player, Thiemo de Bakker in his next round match of the United States Open tennis tournament in New York. Bakker reached the third round at the Flushing Meadows with a lead of 6-7(4), 6-2, 6-3, 3-2 as his foe; Ivan Dodig withdrew from the match due to injury.
Currently ranked number forty eight, de Bakker who also made his way into the semi-finals of the Pilot Pen tennis competition 2010 in New Heaven last week, also reached the third round at the French Open as well as Wimbledon earlier this season.
In the women’s draw, the ninth-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska, despite starting off quite well, couldn’t win her yesterday’s battle against the Chinese tennis player Peng Shuai, who succumbed her in a total of three sets. The final match score was 2-6, 6-1, 6-4. Shuai was the lowest-seeded player from China in the main draw; however, she is the only one now who has made it past the second round of the United States Open tennis tournament. Li Na was dismissed in the first round, while Zheng Jie fell down in the next one.
However, all the three top-seeds on Thursday managed to win with, second-ranked Caroline Wozniacki ousting Chang Kai-Chen, the fourth-seeded Jankovic dismissing Mirjana Lucic, a qualifier in three straight sets and the seventh-seeded Vera Zvonareva knocking down the heavy serving Sabine Lisicki in a two-setter clash in New York. The final match score was 6-1, 7-6(5).
Jelena was pushed to a total of three straight sets on the second occasion here in New York. The fourth-seed, while commenting on her opponent’s game said, “She is a really hard contender and it was a tough clash beyond any doubt. However, I am happy that I managed to win it in the end. She battled quite well and gave me a difficult time on the court However; I didn’t lose my focus throughout the match and thus won it.”
The eleventh-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova, the fourteen-seeded Maria Sharapova and the fifteen-seeded Yanina Wickmayer also triumphed in their respective clashes on Thursday.
