US Open 2010: Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic progress further in the tournament
The five-times United States Open winner, Roger Federer has reached the fourth round of the year’s final Grand Slam with a 6-4 6-3 6-3 victory over French tennis foe, Paul-Henri Mathieu at the Flushing Meadows.
The 29-year-old Federer did not have to be at his very best, as he made his way into the final sixteen in complete controls in New York.
In other action, the third-seeded Serbian tennis ace, Novak Djokovic also did well to defeat his American opponent, James Blake in a total of three sets. The final match score was 6-1 7-6 (7-4) 6-3.
He was later joined in the final sixteen by the Swedish tennis player, Robin Soderling who brushed aside Thiemo de Bakker in a three-setter clash. The final match score was 6-2 6-3 6-3.
The second-seeded Swiss tennis master Roger Federer stated after the match that the conditions in New York were extremely difficult to play without any measure of speculations.
"Battling in the wind was extremely tough. You have to really control your service game and I think I did my job pretty well in the end. I took my opportunities and was playing safe at the same time so I actually played a balanced game in spite of the fact that it was quite hard to hit the ball in the right areas. I think he started off quite well but then lost the focus, which was good for me. After the first set of the match, I even played more aggressively,” said Federer after the match.
The Swiss tennis ace, Roger Federer will next meet Robin Soderling in the fourth-round of the United States Open tennis tournament 2010 in New York.
“It is always tough to play a match against Federer, although we have faced each other on a couple of occasions. In any championship they play, Federer and Nadal will be the favourites, however, there are a lot of other players as well who are capable of defeating them," said Soderling about his next-round clash with the Swiss.
James, whose popularity in New York was ensured by his appearance to the final-eight as a wild card entrant back in 2005, seemed destined for a quick defeat when Novak won the opener in a time period of just twenty two minutes.
However, the 30-year-old American did show his brilliance to bounce back in the next set of the 2010 United States Open tennis tournament.
Blake even stole ahead with the help of a break during the sixth game. However, Novak immediately responded well and proved stronger in the end.
The Serbian's relentless precision kept his serve secure, and he at last won the battle in the third set of the match.
Novak after the match said, "It was a very difficult and tight clash without any doubt. I just tried my level best to stay focused throughout the match. If Blake had won the second set, it could have been a totally different clash,” said Djokovic.
The seventeen-seeded, Gael Monfils secured a third consecutive fourth-round run with a four-setter victory against Janko Tipsarevic. The final match score was 7-6 (7-4) 6-7 (4-7) 6-2 6-4. As a result of this victory, Monfils will next play Richard Gasquet who got the better of his 24-year-old opponent, Kevin Anderson in a total of three sets. The final match score was 7-6 (7-3) 7-5.
Mardy Fish also made his way in the final sixteen at the United States Open tennis tournament after defeating Arnaud Clement in a total of four sets. The final match score was 6-3 6-4 1-6 6-3. As a result of this victory, Fish will next meet Novak Djokovic in his next round match of the United States Open tennis tournament 2010 in New York.
