US Open 2010: Roger Federer breezes into the quarters
The Swiss tennis star, Roger Federer has reached the quarter final round of the United States Open tennis tournament 2010 after defeating Jurgen Melzer in a total of three sets on Monday. The final match score was 6-3 7-6 (7-4) 6-3.
The twenty nine year old Federer looked as though he was in total control of his game throughout the match. The Swiss as a result of this victory will play the fifth seeded Robin Soderling in the quarter final round of the United States Open tennis championship next in New York.
Soderling after losing the opening set bounced back to dismiss his Spanish tennis foe, Albert Montanes in a total of four sets on the Louis Armstrong Stadium. The final match score was 4-6 6-3 6-2 6-3.
The second seeded Roger while commenting on his quarterfinal opponent said, "He has always been a serious threat however these days he has been able to do it on consistent basis, at the greatest level of the game. Therefore, it is definitely going to be a difficult match for both of us. Playing against him in the quarters is going to be a tough task beyond any doubt.”
The Fed Express, leads Robin 12-1 in face to face encounters however lost their previous clash at the clay court French Open tennis tournament this season, ending his streak of twenty three major semi final appearances in a row.
Therefore, Roger is aware of the fact that his foe will be wanting more of the same.
"I am totally aware of the fact that it is going to be a really tough clash especially after he has beaten me in our last clash. However, it all depends on me, how I start off and play. I know if I manage to dominate right from the start, then I can surely get the better of him. I will have to give my hundred percent in the match. He has been playing quite well over the last few seasons with consistency,” said Federer after the match on Monday.
Federer, despite winning did not play at his very best in his match yesterday and was a little lucky during the second set tie breaker with a total of two dead net cords. Jurgen had some chances to recover during the start of the third set however he couldn’t avail them and the big man, went on to finish the match in a time period of two hours and two minutes in the end.
Roger, after the match while commenting on his quarterfinal run said that he is extremely glad to be there and is quite satisfied with the way he is playing at the moment.
In other news, on Monday Gael Monfils registered his name as the first French player to book his place in the quarter final round of the United States Open tennis tournament 2010 in ten years as a result of a straight set win over Richard Gasquet. The seventeen seeded tennis ace, triumphed 6-4 7-5 7-5 in a tight clash against his compatriot player in New York.
Gael blasted a total of fourteen aces and forty winners in a time period of two hours and thirty five minutes in New York. He will take on the third seeded Serbian, Novak Djokovic in the quarter final clash of the United States Open tennis tournament.
Novak earned his sixth successive major quarter final run with his fifth straight victory over Mardy Fish in a total of three sets. The final match score was 6-3 6-4 6-1. The Serbian dominated right from the start and concluded the match in a time period of one hour and fifty minutes on Monday.
"It was my best performance so far in the championship,” said Novak after his victory on the Arthur Ashe Stadium.
