US Open 2010: Samantha Stosur reaches the fourth round
The Australian tennis player, Samantha Stosur has reached the fourth round of the United States Open tennis tournament 2010 after beating her Italian opponent Sara Errani in a total of two sets on Friday. The final match score was 6-2, 6-3. Stosur concluded the match in a time period of just one hour and twenty minutes in New York.
After the victory, Stosur said that she now feels like she is playing like a top ten player on the tour. The former world number one, Stosur has never previously surpassed the second round at the Flushing Meadows, however turned in an inspiring exhibit to get the better of Sara on Friday.
The twenty six year old Samantha said that her first major final appearance at the clay court French Open tennis championship back in June has done wonders for the confidence of the Australian, who now feels that there is no reason why she cannot make it in the finals here in New York.
"If you continue to play well then you can easily reach the finals or at least the semi final round of a major event. I think I have played quite well throughout this season and now reaching the fourth round is a huge jump for me. It feels great to perform well at the major events,” said Stosur after the match.
She broke into top ten rankings in the world on the very first occasion in March, however skipped the two main United States Open tune up championships in Montreal, as well as Cincinnati as a result of her right arm injury.
However, since making her come back at the Pilot Pen tennis tournament 2010 in New Heaven last week, the Australian has been playing quite nicely and looked in total control of her game against Errani on Friday as well.
As a result of this win, Samantha Stosur will next face the twelfth seeded Elena Dementieva in her next round of the United States Open tennis tournament 2010. Elena made her way into the fourth round after brushing aside Daniela Hantuchova in a total of two sets. The final match score was 7-5, 6-2.
The Russian Elena leads 4-1 in their face to face encounter; however, Samantha said she is capable of defeating anyone at her best.
"We have played some really good matches in our past. I think who ever implements her game plan better on that day is going to be the winner in the end. However, I know that I have to play really well in order to surpass her and confirm my spot in the quarters at the Flushing Meadows,” said Stosur after the match.
Elena while commenting on Stosur’s game said, "Samantha like Serena has a really powerful serve and particularly her second serve along is absolutely amazing with an exceptionally good kick. We have not faced each other for a long time however I am sure it’s not going to be easy against her. Anyhow, I am all set for the big challenge. ”
In the doubles match, the Indian tennis star, Sania Mirza was kicked out of the U.S Open tennis tournament on Friday, along with her Russian partner, Vera Dushevina in a total of three sets. Alisa Kleybanova along with Ekaterina Makarova got the better of the Indian-Russian duo with a final match score of 7-6(6), 2-6, 6-7(3) in New York.
In the men’s side, Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna did well to keep the Indian hopes alive by advancing into the second round of the US Open men’s doubles matches in their respective clashes.
Wimbledon runner up Horia Tecau and Robert Lindstedt also continued their progress at the Flushing Meadows, beating Potito Starace and Daniele Bracciali in a total of two sets. The final match score was 6-3, 6-4.
