US Open 2010: Stanislas Wawrinka breezes into the quarters
The American tennis player, Sam Querrey was defeated in the fourth round of the United States Open tennis tournament by his Swiss tennis foe, Stanislas Wawrinka in a total of five sets on Tuesday. The final match score was 7-6 (9), 6-7 (5), 7-5, 4-6, 6-4.
Sam’s departure means that not even single American men has made it into the quarters at the U.S Open for the second year in a row. It has never previously happened in the long history of a championship that started back in 1881.
“I didn’t play under any sort of pressure at all. I obviously wanted to win and keep the hope alive for our people, and there is no doubt about the fact that it was a close clash till the end. In spite of the fact that the Americans are struggling hard, we have failed to reach the later stages for the last two years, which is actually quite annoying at times, as the Europeans are now seen more than often making their way into the quarters and for better,” said Querrey after the match in New York.
There have been even greater negative signs recently for a country that previously produced some tennis greats including John McEnroe, Bill Tilden, Pete Sampras, Jimmy Connors, Andre Agassi as well as Don Budge.
The American men are in the lengthiest major trophy drought in forty two years Open era history of the game of tennis. No man from U.S has captured a Grand Slam, since Andy Roddick at the Flushing Meadows back in 2003.
Moreover, just two active American players from the men’s side namely, Andy Roddick and Robby Ginepri, have made it into the semi-finals at a Grand Slam tournament for the past many years.
During the first set of the match, Sam fired more aces as well as total winners than Stanislas. However, later on he couldn’t avail the break points and lost serve again in the final game, and missed a total of two volleys.
Sam lost in the fourth round for the second Grand Slam championship in a row after also kicking out at Wimbledon in the same round.
“Hopefully, I will reach the later stages next year. I am capable of winning the round of sixteen without any doubt but I just couldn’t make it happen this time,” said Sam after the match.
With Sam gone, Venus Williams is the only American left in the singles competition at the United States Open tennis tournament in New York. She has advanced into the semi-final round at the Flushing Meadows after thrashing out Francesca Schiavone from Italy in a two-setter clash on the Arthur Ashe Stadium. The final match score was 7-6 (5), 6-4.
In another action on Tuesday, the twelfth-seeded tennis ace, Mikhail Youzhny from Russia also managed to advance into the quarter final round of the United States Open tennis tournament, after getting the better of his Spanish tennis opponent Tommy Robredo in a total of four sets on Tuesday. The final match score was 7-5, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.
The 2006 United States Open semi-finalist faced just a total of three break points; however, Tommy converted his only one in the third to grab the set.
Tommy was the lowest-ranked player left in the main draw at number forty one. He triumphed in his clashes in the second as well as third rounds, when his tennis opponent’s withdrew.
Tommy has so far reached the fourth round in seven of his ten visits at the United States Open tennis tournament in New York, and has lost that clash on every single occasion. He was one of the record six Spanish tennis players from the men’s side, who made his way into the fourth round at the Flushing Meadows.
