US Open 2010: Stanislas Wawrinka ousts Sam Querrey to reach quarterfinals
Switzerland’s Stanislas Wawrinka defeated the American 20th seeded, Sam Querrey by five straight sets and a score of 7-6 (9), 6-7 (5), 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 in the 4th round of the U.S. Open 2010 on Tuesday.
As a result, there will be no American man in the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open for a second consecutive year this time. Wawrinka now joins his countryman, Roger Federer. "Roger has always been in the quarterfinals since many years, so that's not something different. But for me, it's my first time, so it's something important for my career”, said Wawrinka.
Stanislas availed his chances after playing a skilful game. With momentum swinging back and forth as quickly as the wind whipping around the Arthur Ashe Stadium, the two players made mistakes and big shots as well. "It was like every set was like that, just really, just a couple of points in every set that made the difference."
During the final set’s third game, Querrey wasted three break points while he fought off one of the major match points with a lob that was just high to force deuce. But when Querrey hit a forehand direct into the net, Wawrinka made the most use of his second chance. "I was pretty sad in the locker room for a little while. I don't feel that great right now. You know, pretty tired. My body is tired. But, I mean, it was an unbelievable match”, Querrey said.
Being the youngest player left in the draw, the 22-year-old Querrey was in the centre of a breakthrough season. This is his second straight Grand Slam in which he reached the fourth round. Earlier, in July he had entered the top 20 rankings for the first time while he won four titles this year.
Wawrinka seemed to be in perfect form during the third round as well, in which he upset fourth seeded Andy Murray. Although in contrast, Wawrinka didn’t came into the U.S. Open like a future quarterfinalist. He is the former top 10 player but now his ranking had slipped to No. 27, his lowest in the last two years. Wawrinka will now be facing Mikhail Youzhny in his next match.
According to John McEnroe, Stanislas Wawrinka has one of the most powerful backhands. It is expected that Stanislas will keep up his good work and perform better. His upcoming match would surely be another of his interesting ones.
