The Australian tennis player from the women’s side, Samantha Stosur has made her way into the second round of the United States Open tennis tournament 2010 after defeating her Russian opponent Elena Vesnina in a total of three sets on Monday. The final match score was 3-6, 7-6 (7-2), 6-1.
The French Open finalist, despite being down in the first set did well and fought back strongly to book her spot in the second round against Anastasia Rodionova on Monday. Anastasia made her way into the next round of the United States Open tennis tournament after getting the better of Bojana Jovanovski from Serbia in a two-setter clash. The final match score was 7-5 6-4.
In another action on Monday, Carsten Ball also advanced with a 6-7 (4-7), 6-3, 6-3, 6-2 victory over Milos Raonic, a qualifier from Canada.
However, it was none other than a teenager from Australian Sally Peers who grabbed every one’s attention on the first day in New York.
Sally defeated Aleksandra Wozniak in her opening match on Monday in a total of two sets. The final match score was 6-0, 6-1. Sally, after the match, while commenting on her own game said, "I performed quite well in my today’s clash. To triumph the first qualifying round, I was happy. To succeed two was fantastic and then to qualify and contest in a Grand Slam event was nothing more than a dream for me. And now after finally reaching the second round of the competition, I can’t express my excitement in words. It’s just been a wonderful experience for me this year at the Flushing Meadows.”
Sally’s mom Elizabeth also contested in the United States Open Women’s singles tournament back in 1981 as well as a couple of Wimbledon and Australian Open competitions in her career.
As a result of this victory, Sally Peer will play her second round match against the Belgian tennis star, Kim Clijsters on Wednesday. Clijsters won last year’s United Straight Open tennis tournament at the Flushing Meadows in New York.
Peer while commenting on Clijster said, "Kim Clijsters is one of my favourites in the game of tennis. I have her signed picture in my room. To meet her in the second round of the United States Open tennis tournament this season is really going to be exciting and I am really looking forward to it.”
When asked about her next match at the Flushing Meadows, Sally Peer said, "To fight on the centre court would be fun. I am slowly getting familiar to the conditions here in New York and have started enjoying the experience. As far as Clijster’s game is concerned, obviously it has no comparison whatsoever and all I can say is that this clash will give me a good opportunity to learn a lot from the reigning US open champion, Kim Clijsters.”
In another yesterday’s match, Sophie Ferguson was defeated by her Italian tennis opponent Maria Elena Camerin in a total f two sets. The final match score was 6-4 6-0.
Daniela Hantuchova in her match dismissed the former top-ranked Dinara Safina in a two-setter clash in the first round of the United States Open tennis tournament on Monday. The final match score was 6-3, 6-4.
Hantuchova, the twenty fourth seeded player from the women’s side had lost to the unseeded Dinara in the second round of the Pilot Pen tennis competition last week in New Heaven. The 27-year-old Slovakian made her way into the fourth round in New York back in 2009.
Dinara was sidelined for nearly three months this season as a result of her back injury and has dropped down in rankings to as low as number fifty in the world. She was the top-seed from the women’s side at the United States Open tennis tournament back in 2009, however was defeated in the third round.
