US Open 2010: Venus Williams makes it to the semis- will now face Kim Clijsters
American tennis star, Venus Williams has reached the semi-final round of the United States Open 2010 after beating Francesca Schiavone in a total of two sets on Tuesday. The final match score remained 7-6 (5), 6-4.
The 30-year-old Williams, after the match, said, “I want to reach the final at the Flushing Meadows and eventually win the title. However, I am completely focused on the semis at the moment and I won’t lose my concentration by looking ahead of it.”
Up next for the American is the last year’s US Open winner, Kim Clijsters who would meet her in the semi final round. The Belgian ran her United States Open streak to a total of nineteen clashes by dismissing the Roland Garros finalist, Sam Stosur in a total of three sets. Her final match score was 6-4, 5-7, and 6-3.
Kim and Venus have split their twelve last encounters; however, Clijsters won the most recent four including the fourth round at the Flushing Meadows back in 2009. “Williams is a great competitor. She has been performing quite well over her last few clashes here in New York. I am really excited and looking forward to the challenge ahead as I know it is not going to be easy to win the match against her,” said Clijsters.
Moreover, Venus is also the only US player left in the singles contest after the 20th seeded Sam Querrey lost in a five setter clash to world number 25, Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland. The final match score was 7-6 (9), 6-7 (5), 7-5, 4-6, 6-4. “I, obviously, tried my level best to win the match. It was a close clash without any question but Wawrinka was lucky enough in the end to book a place in the next round”, said Querrey after the match.
Wawrinka would now face the world number 12, Mikhail Youzhny of Russia in the quarter final round. Youzhny, earlier, got the better of Tommy Robredo from Spain in a total of four sets. The final match score was 7-5, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4. Tommy was one of the five Spanish tennis aces playing in the round four. The world number eight, Fernando Verdasco eliminated David Ferrer in a total of five sets. The final match score was 5-7, 6-7 (8), 6-3, 6-3, 7-6 (4).
Meanwhile, another top ranked Spaniard Rafael Nadal has also managed to reach the quarter final round. The 24-year-old got the better of his Spanish tennis foe, Feliciano Lopez in a total of three sets. The final match score remained 6-3, 6-4, and 6-4. Next up for Rafa in the final eight is the eight seeded Fernando Verdasco but Nadal has already beaten him in all ten of their last clashes.
Nadal is seeking his first ever US Open title, succeeding in doing so would register his name as the youngest tennis contender ever to grab all four major trophies, the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon as well as the United States Open, at least once during his professional life.
With his French Open and Wimbledon title wins earlier this season, the Spaniard would also be just the fourth player to have captured three major crowns in a row along with Rod Laver, Pete Sampras and Roger Federer.
