US Open 2010: Wozniacki likely to face Maria Sharapova in the round of sixteen
The US Open hot favourite tennis ace from the women’s side, Caroline Wozniacki is likely to meet Russian star Maria Sharapova, the eight seeded Chinese Li Na and the fourth seeded Serbian Jelena Jankovic on her way to the final battle of the United States Open tennis tournament, following the draws on Thursday.
The Belgian tennis ace, Kim Clijsters got the better of Danish sensation in a total of two sets in the final US Open round back in 2009 ansd went on to win the trophy, even though Kim was returning to the game of tennis after a period of two years. The final match score was 7-5, 6-3. Clijsters this year is seeded number two to win the title at the Flushing Meadows in New York.
Anyhow, Caroline, will meet Chelsey Gullickson, a professional tennis player from the United States of America in her first round match of the tournament. She is likely to face the former world number one Russian, Maria Sharapova in the round of sixteen in her quest for the title clash.
Maria, the 2006 United States Open champion, pulled out of the Rogers Cup Women tennis tournament 2010 just a few days ago as a result of her foot injury however was a finalist at the ATP Cincinnati Masters in the other main United States warm up event. The three-time major winner, Maria Sharapova will play her opening match against Jarmila Groth, a professional tennis ace from Australia.
The top ranked tennis player from the women’s side, Serena Williams is not playing at the Flushing Meadows this year due to the foot injury she suffered after capturing the grass court Grand Slam trophy back in July at the All England Club. The American won the 2010 Wimbledon crown as her 13th major title. However, her absence implies that the field in New York is now open for the rest of the top ranked players to claim the trophy.
"It is always highly inspiring to have Williams in the draw. You are fully aware of the fact that you have to fight really hard,” Clijsters said. "Not to have her this time at the Flushing Meadows is not only sad for the players but for her fans as well as the organizers of the tournament.”
The fourth seeded Serbian Jelena Jankovic will take on Simona Halep from Romania in her opening match of the US Open and could face Alicia Molik or a qualifier in the second round with seventh seeded Russian Vera Zvonareva, a possible quarter final opponent.
The US Open third seeded American Venus Williams has been drawn to play Roberta Vinci from Italy in her first round of the competition with the sixth seeded French Open winner Francesca Schiavone, as her possible quarterfinal foe in New York.
Kim, who captured the Cincinnati trophy as well as titles at Miami and Brisbane this season, will open her tournament versus Greta Arn with a possible quarter final battle versus the fifth seeded Australian Samantha Stosur.
While suffering from a hip injury recently, Kim is not willing to go for a medical check up prior to the start of the US Open.
"Playing this week, I felt much better,” Clijster said. "Even if it is not hundred percent recovered, it’s not like I am not going to participate at the final Grand Slam of the season. However, if it continues to bother me even after the tournament then I will seriously take some break and go for the tests.”
Clijsters has not participated in a lot of events this season, however is still hopeful for the Flushing Meadows.
"It will obviously take some time to get back in full form and be in total control of my game. Once I participate in few matches, my game will automatically get better and improve for sure,” added Clijsters.
