US Open 2010: Yung-Jan Chan wins her first round clash, Caroline also advances
The British professional tennis player Anne Keothavong was knocked down in her opening round match of the United States Open tennis tournament by Yung-Jan Chan in a total of three sets on Tuesday. The final match score was 2-6, 6-1, 6-1.
Keothavong’s best performance at the Flushing Meadows over the last three years was her third round appearance back in 2008 however, after that a couple of serious injuries affected her progress.
While commenting on her game after the match, the 26-year-old Anne said, "I am not the kind of player I used to be. However, no one knows about the future but I am surely going to take some time off and consider all aspects of my game and weaknesses and then decide my areas of improvement to avoid such defeats in future.”
Currently ranked number 142 in the world, Keothavong after a long injury lay off year, had been expecting to join her fellow compatriot Elena Baltacha in the round two of the United States Open tennis tournament 2010 in New York. However, after grabbing the first set comfortably under extreme heat at the Flushing Meadows, Keothavong later on lost a total of twelve out of the next fourteen games, as the world number seventy seven from China, Yung-Jan Chan took charge of the match.
It was a second disappointing major performance in a row for Anne, having already lost at the hands of Anastasia Rodionova during the first round of the grass court Grand Slam tournament in straight sets.
"My rankings as well as my game aren’t where I actually want to see myself as my expectations are much greater,” said Keothavong, who was ranked number forty eight back in 2009 before suffering the second critical injury of her professional life.
While commenting on her Tuesday’s match that concluded in a time period of one hundred and twenty two minutes on the court number eighteen at the Flushing Meadows, she said, "I started off quite well by dominating the first set however afterwards, Chan changed her strategy and I couldn’t judge it well. I kept on trying hard throughout the match but she didn’t let me come back after the first set on Tuesday. Somehow, the credit goes to her for playing so well after being down in the first set. I didn’t expect her to play so well. However, her strategy-changing technique really did the trick and I have seriously no justifications for my defeat.”
After winning the opening set, Keothavong lost her serve on a total of three occasions during the second set of the match and then took a medical break after being broken again in the next game of the final set.
More sad news for the British fans on Tuesday came when Ross Hutchins also lost his doubles match in New York. Hutchins along with Scott Lipsky from the United States of America were kicked out by Oliver Marach and Lukasz Kubot in a total of two sets on Tuesday. The final match score was 7-6 (7-4) 6-3.
In another action on Tuesday, the top-seeded women tennis player Caroline Wozniacki also won her opening round match of the United States Open tennis tournament after getting the better of Chelsey Gullickson, an NCAA champion in a two-setter clash. The final match score was 6-1, 6-1.
As a result of some lengthy early clashes, this one started at 11:52 p.m. local time on Tuesday night and concluded at 12:53 a.m. on Wednesday.
Gullickson was playing in her first Grand Slam tournament just after two days of her 20th birthday. She made her way into the competition as a wild card entrant.
