US Open 2010: top eight women contenders at Flushing Meadows
As the final Grand Slam of the season, the United States Open tennis tournament 2010 has started this week. Bettor.com takes a look at the top eight tennis players in descending order from the Women’s side who are most likely to win this year’s US Open title at the Flushing Meadows.
8. Vera Zvonareva
Although Vera has never made her way into the quarters of the US Open competition so far in her career but she is looking to reach at least the later stages of the tournament this season in New York.
7. Ana Ivanovic
Ana has had a couple of successes in a major tournament except the Flushing Meadows. She stands at career 7-6 at the United States Open tennis championship. Although, there are no chances as such for the Serbian tennis ace to triumph at this season’s hard court major event, however if she manages to come out strongly and her game clicks, it will be really exciting to watch her beyond any doubt.
6. Elena Dementieva
Dementieva has made her way into the later stages of the United States Open tennis tournament on a number of occasions in her career so far. The Russian has reached the quarters or more on a total of five occasions including her final run back in 2004. Moreover, Elena has seen success this season in the previous three major events as well. Therefore, she is likely to be one of the final eight players at the Flushing Meadows this season in New York.
5. Svetlana Kuznetsova
It won’t be shocking either to see Svetlana making her way deep into the championship this season. The former US Open winner is career 25-7 at the tournament, making it her second best major performance behind the clay court French Open tennis competition.
The former second-ranked tennis ace from the women’s side Svetlana Kuznetsova has all the talent in the world to comfortably outlast a couple of top-seed players.
4. Venus Williams
The sole American player on the list, Venus Williams is a two-time United States Open winner at the Flushing Meadows and stands at 54-9 career record at the competition.
There is no doubt about the fact that the fourth-ranked American is one of the strongest contenders on the tour and who knows she ends up winning the title this year in New York.
3. Caroline Wozniacki
The top-seeded tennis player from the women’s side Caroline Wozniacki was a runner-up at the United States Open tennis tournament back in 2009.
Wozniacki also reached the quarterfinal round this season at the clay court French Open tennis tournament and definitely has the aptitude to go deep into the competition. She has been placed above Venus particularly because of her young age, and it is definitely going to be a great delight watching her in New York.
2. Maria Sharapova
Sharapova hasn't actually experienced any major success that she had during the initial stages of her career. The Russian is a three-time major winner and a former United States Open champ as well.
However, that win came back in 2006, and since then the Russian has struggled to go beyond the third round of the competition. However, she has performed quite well over the last few months and is likely to repeat her splendid performance at the US Open this year in New York.
1. Kim Clijsters
A two time United States Open winner and the defending champ, Kim Clijsters is the most favourite in the eyes of many experts in spite of the fact that the Belgian has been seeded number two to win the trophy this year in New York. Kim stands at 30-5 career at the tournament and clearly feels comfortable on the hard court at the US Open event.
In the absence of top-ranked player Serena Williams, the field is in fact quite open for the reigning United States Open champ. There is no doubt about the fact that if Kim plays at her very best there is no one on the tour who can beat her on the hard court of Flushing Meadows.
