US Open 2011 women's champion? – Part One: Caroline Wozniacki
Caroline Wozniacki was born on the 11th of July 1990, in the city of Odense, and is a professional tennis player from Denmark. The 21-year-old according to the WTA is currently ranked number one in the world. She has
so far captured a total of 17 WTA titles as of June 2011.
This year the Dane kicked off her season with an exhibition match against Kim Clijsters which she lost after a surprise tie-break. She then became the Captain of team Europe at the Hong Kong Tennis Classic, which was another exhibition
match, where she played and won against team Asia but lost to Team Russia.
Although, Wozniacki dropped to world no. 2 during the second week of February, she quickly regained her spot the following week at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships. Where, she eventually won the first title of the year
and her 13th career singles title. She clenched her 14th singles title at the final of the first Premier Mandatory event of the year, the Indian Wells, where she ostracized Marion Bartoli in the final 6-1, 2-6, 6-3.
Having played at all the three Grand Slam events this year; at the Australian Open, she qualified in all the rounds right up until she reached the semi final, which she lost to the Chinese Li Na 3-6 7-5 6-3.
The 21-year-old, Wozniacki was the top seed at the French open but was outflanked by Daniela Hantuchova who was 28th seeded in the third round.
During the third Grand Slam event of the season, at the classic grass courts in Wimbledon, Wozniacki won the first three rounds but lost the fourth round to the Slovakian Dominika Cibulkova.
She then went on to play for the Swedish Open in Bastad but retired because of a shoulder injury in the second round. Wozniacki hasn’t played since then and is recovering from her injury in time for the US Open.
Standing at 1.77 meters the world number 1 participated for the first time at the US Open in 2007 where she defeated Tzipora Obziler in the first round but lost in the second round to the French Alize Cornet.
In 2008, she won the first three rounds beating the 14th rank Victoria Azarenka 6-4, 6-4 but in the fourth round lost to Jelena Jankovic the Serb. The eight-seeded tennis player from the women’s side Caroline Wozniacki
was a runner-up at the United States Open tennis tournament in 2009.
Caroline Wozniacki took part for the third time at the US Open 2010, where Serena Williams dropped out because of a foot injury which enabled Wozniacki to become the top seed at this tournament. Although, Wozniacki was not able
to defeat Vera Zvonareva in the semi final and claim the US Open cup for herself, she did outdo Serena Williams on the rankings and take over her place as top-seed. With her semi final appearance, the 21-year-old became the only one woman other than Venus
Williams to have reached at least the fourth round of all 4 Grand Slam events in 2010.
Aiming for her debut Grand Slam title, Wozniacki will surely have to battle it out against the Chinese superstar Li Na or the American powerhouse, Serena Williams if she wishes to make it to the final match.
