US Open 2012: Phillip Chew, Jamie Subandhi move forward to Mixed Doubles quarter-finals
Mixed Doubles partners Phillip Chew and Jamie Subandhi ensured their presence in the quarter-final round of Yonex OCBC US Open GPG after stamping Eric Go-Paula Lynn Obanana on July 4, 2012.
Both compatriot teams exhibited commendable skills in the 41-minute encounter and finished this second round match with 16-21, 21-13 and 21-16.
The victorious duo will now face higher ranked Japanese pair Kenichi Hayakawa-Misaki Matsutomo in the round of eight.
Phillip and Jamie will surely utilise their confidence which they have earned by performing exceedingly well in first two rounds of this Grand Prix Gold tournament.
In second round, they came back from horrendous start and sealed a 2-1 win by ruling last two sets of the match.
First set completely belonged to Eric Go and Paula Lynn as they started beating their challengers from very first stroke and kept them at lower end until the last shot was played.
They gained an immediate advantage with 5-1 margin and magnified the impact by adding four consecutive points just before the interval.
Though, they committed some unforced errors in third quarter of the set but still they managed to finish this crucial segment with a notable figure of 21-16.
However, it was their last success in the home event as the opposing team put their expedition to halt in following games.
The scratch pair of Phillip-Jamie of USA kept a low profile in the start but they registered their presence by dominating four uninterrupted rallies after 3-3.
They maintained this four-point difference until 11-7 before half time and started second half with great confidence.
Later part of the game started with their intensive invasion which took them to a commanding position of 16-10.
Eric Go and Paula Lynn could not withstand their attack for long and surrendered after reading 13-21 score on the board.
Third set became crucial as both teams were now standing level and they tried their best to unseat their opponent.
The twosome of Phillip and Jamie struggled in the beginning but they revived their lost chemistry just when it was needed the most.
They were locked in a tense competition at 17-16 when they clinched the ending four points and swept the table with 21-16.
