US Open 2012: Sergiy Shatenko thrashes Andres Quadri to make it to second round
Men’s Singles shuttler Sergiy Shatenko of Canada saved country’s honour by making his cut into second round of Yonex OCBC US Open GPG after beating Andres Quadri in the opening match on July 2, 2012.
This straight-set match concluded in just 30 minutes with score-board flashing final margin of 21-19 and 21-15.
The Canadian campaigner played impeccable badminton and setup a third round clash with Malaysian shuttler Chun Seang Tan who is ranked fourth in this Grand Prix Gold event.
Sergiy Shatenko opened his marathon in tremendous fashion and registered a decent total of 5-1 straight away in the beginning.
However, he lost focus in next couple of rallies and let seven vital points slip from his hands. He was struggling at 5-9 when four uninterrupted rallies helped him level the score at 9-9.
Both players strived hard to finish the first half with a favourable margin. They put everything they had to enter in mid-game interval as leading contender but Sergiy ended this race with a slight edge in 11-10 margin.
Later part of the game was most memorable section of the match as both contestants made the crowd gasp with their breath-taking performance.
At first Andres Quadri strengthened his grip with 16-14 and enjoyed the upper hand until 18-16 but his supremacy was short lived as Sergiy Shatenko counter-balanced the situation.
The Canadian shuttler reinstated his dominance with three consecutive points and stole the lime-light with a decisive figure of 21-19.
Next game started with Mexican shuttler’s thrilling campaign as he pushed his challenger on the back-foot with a brisk attack.
He clinched three continuous points to reach at 4-1 and then doubled the impact by registering 9-4 total just before half-time.
However, Sergiy Shatenko did not remain at the lower end permanently and bounced back with a strong reply. He gathered seven points without any interruption and placed a notable figure of 11-9 at mid-game break.
Later part of the game remained interesting just until 14-13 as it completely belonged to Sergiy after this competitive situation. He bagged eight out of last nine points to sweep the table with 21-15.
