US Open 2012: Valeri Sorokina, Nina Vislova unseat Vita Marissa, Mona Santoso in semi-final round
Russia’s talented female shuttlers Valeri Sorokina and Nina Vislova forged a fruitful chemistry against Vita Marissa-Mona Santoso in semi-finals of Yonex OCBC US Open GPG and made their way into the final round on July 6, 2012.
This 42-minute battle was staged in Orange County Badminton Club (OCBC) and both teams made the crowd gasp with their breath-taking performance.
The Russian ladies exhibited better finishing skills and wrapped the show with overwhelming margin of 21-15 and 21-19.
On the other hand, Vita Marissa and Mona Santoso crashed out despite putting laudable resistance in both segments of the match.
World Number 21 duo Valeri-Nina laid the foundation of this splendid victory in the very first game when they dazzled their challengers with a lustrous performance.
They played positive badminton and clinched six valuable points without any interruption after 5-4 total.
The Indonesian campaigners did not have enough time to get settled and launch a counter attack strategy. They kept trailing behind all the way to one-minute break and got down with a frightening margin of 4-11.
Later part of the game saw Vita and Mona showing some spark as they stepped forward by prevailing in five continuous rallies.
However, their rivals’ determination proved too much for them and they gave up this futile chase after winning 15 points in the opening set.
Meanwhile, the second seeded Valeri and Nina maintained the upper hand until the last shot was played.
They mounted pressure by putting an indomitable figure of 16-9 and then forced their competitors to surrender by putting up a score of 21-15.
There was no smooth road for them in next game as the opposing team chased them throughout the closing segment.
Though, the twosome of Vita and Mona remained far behind in most part of the game but they managed to catch their rivals in the final moments.
In first half of the match, the Russian campaigners stamped their authority by gaining notable lead with 11-7 before the interval.
After mid-game break, the Indonesians picked up the pace and levelled the score 14-14. They remained close until game point situation but could not tip the scale in their favour.
Valeri and Nina stole the lime-light with final result of 21-19 and qualified for the final match against Misaki Matsutomo-Ayaka Takahashi of Japan.
