US Open 2012: Vita Marissa, Mona Santoso depose Phyllis Chan, Christin Tsai in quarter-finals
Women’s Doubles team Vita Marissa-Mona Santoso played flawless badminton against Phyllis Chan-Christin Tsai and ensured their presence in the semi-finals of Yonex OCBC US Open GPG on July 5, 2012.
This quarter-final match, held at Orange County Badminton Club (OCBC), kept the audience intact for 29 minutes before ending with 21-15 and 21-16 margin.
The victorious Indonesian duo was at its best throughout this straight-set tussle as they did not give their opponents even a single chance to rise and stamped them in splendid manner.
On the other hand, the losing contenders strived hard but could not avoid a woeful exit from the round of eight.
Now Vita and Mona will be up against second seeded couple Valeri Sorokina-Nina Vislova in the semi-final round.
If they continue with their current form and win then a title match seat will be waiting for them in this Grand Prix Gold tournament.
Earlier in their quarter-final contest, both female shuttlers forged a fruitful chemistry and laid the foundation of their dominance in the very first set.
Though, they were bit confused at the start but they discovered their competitive bond after a couple of initial rallies.
Meanwhile, the opposing team relished this opportunity and gained an immediate advantage with 5-1 total.
However, Vita and Mona gathered pace and caught their rivals at 7-7. This campaign helped them to put a respectable total of 11-8 before half time.
Later part of the game started with their intensive invasion which kept Phyllis-Christin on the back-foot until 16-9 margin.
The Canadians made a laudable effort and narrowed the gap with 17-15 score but they could not carry this momentum in the last stage. They lost four points in a row and knelt down after reading decisive figure of 21-15.
Next game was played at same speed and the result also remained similar in the end. Both teams chased each other until third quarter of the set but then the Indonesian campaigners left their challengers far behind.
Vita and Mona pocketed first half with 11-9 and then raised their lead with couple of continuous points in the end. They wrapped the show with 21-16 score on the board.
