US Open Men’s Singles’ Preview of Day Four – Tennis Special
Numbers of seeded players including Roger Federer, Tomas Berdych and Andy Roddick are all in action on day four at the US Open 2012. They are all in great form and are bidding to reach far at this final of the four Grand Slam events held in Corona Park in New York City, United States.
Seeded top at this major hard court event, Roger Federer will square off against Germany’s Bjorn Phau for the third time. Bidding for his sixth major at this event, Federer stomped over the local challenger, Donald Young, in straight sets in 94 minutes. The German veteran on the other hand battled past Belgium’s Maxime Authom in four sets to advance.
"I thought it was good, considering I played a very talented player who I didn’t know much, I haven’t played against him," said the jubilant Swiss after bagging the match against Young.
The 17-time Grand Slam champion has conquered Phau at his previous two encounters in straight sets and is currently in great run of form. He captured his seventh Wimbledon title few months ago and made a final showdown at the London Olympics at All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. Spicing his performance further, the Swiss Maestro is coming off capturing a title at the Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati.
Ranked seventh in the South African Airways ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour Rankings, Berdych will take on the Estonian star, Jurgen Zopp, at Flushing Meadows.
Zopp battled past Uzbekistan’s Denis Istomin in four sets while the Czech number one trounced the Belgian contender, David Goffin, in straight sets to set up this match.
"It's a good point and good statistic for me," the Czech reflected on the saved break points after overpowering Goffin. "I think he has a pretty good future ahead of him. If he just stays doing what he's doing, then I think we can see him in the future quite high."
Seeded sixth at Flushing Meadows, Berdych smashed 17 aces and fired 40 winners to formulate a 7-5, 6-3, 6-3 score line. In addition to this, Berdych is coming off from the final showdown at the Winston-Salem Open (lost to John Isner). He also secured a final berth at the Mutua Madrid Open (lost to Federer) and conquered the Open Sud de France in Montpelier (dumped Gael Monfils in final round).
The former world number one, Roddick re-ignited his spark this circuit and high-spiritedly entered the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. He cruised past his qualifying compatriot, Rhyne Williams, with a 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 score line in one hour and 58 minutes.
The 2003 titlist, Roddick will face off the Australian number one, Bernard Tomic in the round of 64. The 19-year-old bounced from a set down to stomp over Argentina’s Carlos Berlocq in four sets to set up this battle. Both stars are facing each other for the first time but the local seed is most likely to pull out the victory and advance.
