US Open Men’s competition 2010: Preview of the first round matches- part one
With the United States Open tennis tournament 2010 about to begin this Monday, heres a look at the first thirteen matches to be played in the first round of the competition in New York.
1. Rafael Nadal versus Teymuraz Gabashvili:
The world number one tennis player from the men’s side Rafael Nadal will play his opening round match against Teymuraz Gabashvili and is likely to surpass him in straight sets as the Spaniard also got the better of Teymuraz on two occasions back in 2009.
2 Denis Istomin versus Maximo Gonzalez
The top ranked Uzbek tennis ace, Denis Istomin is 22-19 this season, where as Gonzalez stands at 2-4. Istomin is likely to beat Maximo in their opening clash of the US Open 2010.
3. Gilles Simon versus Donald Young
Both of them have faced each other in a total of two occasions so far in their career. Simon turned out to be the winner on both occasions beating Donald in straight sets. However, that was two years ago and now Simon has grown into a mature player and therefore it is definitely going to be a tight clash, but Simon still remains as the top favourite to win the battle in the end.
4. Philipp Kohlschreiber versus Tobias Kamke
The twenty ninth ranked tennis ace Kohlschreiber has so far nearly captured as many career trophies as his compatriot opponent has won career clashes on the tour. Therefore, Philipp surely stands out among the two of them.
5. Feliciano Lopez versus Santiago Giraldo
The twenty third ranked Feliciano Lopez has so far faced his first round US Open opponent, Santiago Giraldo on one occasion in his career; back in 2008 where he got the better of Santiago in straight sets. As far as this match is concerned, both of them have almost equal chances with Lopez a slight favourite due to his previous victory.
6. Sergiy Stakhovsky versus Peter Luczak
Neither of these players have had much success in major tournaments, however Stakhovsky has a total of two career trophies on hard surfaces, where as Peter’s career record on the hard court is well below five hundred. Therefore, Sergiy certainly enjoys a slight edge without any question.
7. David Ferrer versus Alexandr Dolgopolov
The tenth ranked Ferrer recently toppled Dolgopolov at the ATP Cincinnati Masters tennis tournament, however the clash went to a total of three sets, so another tight matchup is surely expected at the Flushing Meadows in New York
8. Daniel Brands versus Benjamin Becker
Benjamin hasn't succeeded here since his magical run to the fourth round back in 2006. Brand on the other hand, shocked everyone by reaching the round of sixteen this year at the grass court Grand Slam tournament. Therefore, he is likely to take down Becker in spite of the fact that he has not participated in a hard court event since March.
9. Jarkko Nieminen versus Daniel Gimeno-Traver
Nieminen made his way into the quarterfinal round of the United States Open tennis tournament back in 2005 where as Gimeno-Traver was knocked down in his Flushing Meadows debut last season. Nieminen will easily win this match, provided that he plays his normal game at his best.
10. Ernests Gulbis versus Jeremy Chardy
The twenty four ranked Gulbis knocked down Chardy on clay court this season and on hard surface back in 2009. Another interesting fact is that he didn’t miss a single set in either of the clash. Gulbis is therefore expected to outlast Jeremy Chardy in straight sets.
12. David Nalbandian versus Qualifier
The thirty one ranked tennis ace from the men’s side, Nalbandian has triumphed in a total of six straight first round matches at the Flushing Meadows, so there is no chance for the qualifier against the Argentinean tennis player.
13. Florent Serra versus Florian Mayer
These players don’t have a ton of current history against each other; however Serra has triumphed in both their career clashes, including an opening round match at the hard court Australian Open tennis tournament back in 2008 in straight sets. Therefore, experts don’t see him falling to the German Mayer.
