US Open prize money swells to a record amount this year – Tennis News
Everyone knows tennis players make good money by performing at the elite platforms all around the world, especially the Grand Slam events, but the prize money of the US Open has nerve been as big as it will be this season. While
all players eye to clinch the last Grand Slam title of the year in New York, the USTA (United States Tennis Association) has announced revised purse for the winners of the Championships. The total US Open prize money could touch $28.1 million this season,
including the Emirates Airlines US Open Series events.
The USTA has announced to add two million dollars more to the prize pool of the Grand Slam event this circuit, increasing it to a record $25.5 million. Prior to the Major event’s beginning, the US Open Series will further allow
top three performers from men’s and women’s sides to pocket up to $2.6 million as a bonus prize for their efforts on courts.
"We recognise the mounting financial pressures associated with competing on the global professional tennis circuits and especially for those who do not reach the second week of the US Open,” Jon Vegosen, USTA Chairman of the Board
and President, said. “We believe the additional prize money, as well as how it will be strategically distributed, will help alleviate some of the pressure."
It is the largest prize pool for the US Open in the history of the sport and has given a new hype to the tournament prior to its beginning. Tennis fans may anticipate that the Top-Three, Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Rafael
Nadal, are the top contenders from ATP to collect this huge booty from USTA this season. From women’s side, Victoria Azarenka, Agnieszka Radwanska, Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams are the top contenders for winning this treasure hunt on American soil.
An ATP press release stated: "We are pleased that the discussions initiated by the ATP with each of the Grand Slams this year have resulted in certain prize money increases for players in 2012, and we remain focused on our active
dialogue with these events about player compensation for 2013 and beyond."
The last Grand Slam event will begin from 27th of August.
