US Open tournament: Top two Champions from the women’s side
With the United States Open about to begin within a couple of weeks, uncertainty prevails as a couple of the top ranked tennis players from the women’s side are side lined as a result of injuries.
Serena Williams is on top of the list because of her foot surgery. The former top ranked tennis ace, Justine Henin is also facing problems due to her right elbow injury.
In case both of these top ranked players won’t be able to participate in the US Open tournament 2010, the question of 'who is going to win this year’s title at the Flushing Meadows in New York?' is even more neon lit.
Nothing can really be said about this year’s winner but lets have a look at the top two United States Open winners since 1968, in terms of the number of final appearances as well as their success percentages.
Lets start with the number two contestant on the list, Steffi Graf. The German tennis ace, Steffi Graf has appeared in a total of eight United States Open finals out of which she won five of them. Her success percentage was 87.95. Graf captured her very first trophy back in 1988, and her last title in 1996.
In 1988 Graf thrashed Gabriella Sabatini in a three setter final battle. The next year, the German tennis ace got the better of Martina Natratilova in a three setter clash to secure her second US Open crown.
Graf won her third US Open title back in 1993 after defeating Helena Sukova in a total of two sets. The German won two more US Open titles back in 1995 as well as in 1996, beating Monica Seles on both occasions.
She ruled with her powerful forehand as well as back hand and will always be listed as one of the greatest all time tennis players from the women’s side. Her winning percentage at the United States Open tournament makes her one of the best without any measure of speculation.
The best contendor would definitely be Chris Evert. The American tennis ace, Chris Evert has played in a total of nine United States Open finals out of which she has won six.
Chris won the US Open title for a total of four years in a row from 1975 to 1978. She also played in a total of six finals in a row from 1975-1980. Chris stands on top of the list in the modern era with the most wins at the United States Open tournament where she stands at a success percentage of 89.3.
Evert participated at the U.S. Open competition on a total of nineteen occasions, starting in 1971 where as her last appearance came back in 1989. She contested in her very first US Open tournament when she was just sixteen and the last one at thirty four year of age.
In 1975 Chris Evert captured her very first US Open trophy after knocking down Evonne Goolagong in a total of three sets. The following year Evert got the better of Goolagong again in a two setter clash to win the title.
In 1977, the American tennis ace hammered down Wendy Turnbull with a final match score of 7-6, 6-2 to grab her third US Open title in a row. Chris didn’t stop and continued her winning momentum in 1978 as well when she defeated Pam Shriver in the final battle to earn her fourth consecutive title.
In 1980, the American once again won the US Open title after defeating Hana Mandlilkova in a total of three sets. The final match score was 5-6, 6-1, 6-1.
Evert grabbed her last US Open trophy back in 1982 after knocking down Hana Mandlikova in a total of two sets. The final match score was 6-3, 6-1.
Her determination and strong urge to win made her a real champion and no one has been able to exceed her totals at the Flushing Meadows and it is doubtful that any other player except maybe Serena Williams (who still has a long way to go), could surpass her.
