I sent something via Priority Mail and it was damaged badly. Would I have needed to purchase insurance to hold the post office responsible??

  1. No. The postal service automatically insures packages up to a certain dollar amount (you'll have to check to see what that amount is). You can pay extra for insurance over that amount. Contact your local post office to find out what the process is to file a claim for the damaged item.

  2. Yes. The USPS always asks if you would like to insure your package for this very reason. ( Even with the insurance it can be a pain to collect.)  The insurance fee is generally very small and worth it when sending items.
