US Ryder Cup Fight Hits Slight Snag; Three Caddies To Fly On Business Class Plane
It looks like Tiger Woods will be flying to Wales without his trusted caddy, Steve Williams. On Wednesday, multiple media sources reported Williams and two other caddies of US Ryder Cup members will be
traveling on a commercial plane after they were unable to fit all personnel on the original charter flight on Sunday due to a problem with the plane.
Williams, who served as Wood’s caddy since 1999, will not accompany his boss on Sunday, when majority of US team are scheduled to fly to Newport, Wales for the 2010 Ryder Cup.
Aside from Williams, Stewart’s Cink’s caddie, Frank Williams, and Rickie Fowler’s caddie, Koe Skovron, will also miss the charter flight due to the limited capacity size of the plane.
Nevertheless, US PGA spokesman Julius Mason said they will carry the travel expenses of the three caddies, who are set for a business class flight next week.
The spokesman added they had a change of plans due to the technical problems encountered by the original plane they obtained.
The smaller, alternative plane could not accommodate the entire US Ryder Cup team, prompting them to bump the caddies who will not participate in this week’s PGA Tour event in Atlanta.
"The original plane we had for Team USA was not able to fly," Mason told AFP. "We had to obtain an alternative plane, and the configuration of seats on the new plane did not allow to accommodate everyone
in superior class seats."
The Americans, led by Ryder Cup team captain Corey Pavin, are confident they will be able to defend the title they won in Kentucky two years ago.
"It's funny what people make of it, when we play in the United States, everyone comes in separately. Just because we're going overseas doesn't mean we all have to go together," said Pavin, who personally
handpicked the members of team USA.
This year’s Ryder Cup is expected to be a lot tougher than the previous editions, as American and European golfers engage in breezy playing condition at Celtic Manor Resort, Twenty Ten Course in Newport,
Wales (from 1 October to 3 October).
