US Senators want Lockout to end soon, urge League, Players Association to settle differences -NHL Update
Two members of the United States Senate from New Jersey, Frank Lautenberg and Robert Menendez have urged the National Hockey League (NHL) and Players’ Association to work out their differences and get the regular season back on track sooner than later.
A number of issues have arose due to the dreadful lockout in the league, but some things are more important than stopping work to reach a deal since it has affected a number of families in terms of working as the nation has seen teams cutting a number of
jobs.
In a letter to NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman and NHLPA executive director Donald Fehr, the Senators hope that they will come to realise how the United States is already going through its worst period in history, in terms of unemployment and a lockout only
makes that worse.
According to the Senators, the deadlock may result in “millions of dollars in lost economic activity”, which is not only a major loss to people but to the nation’s wealth overall.
“As you consider your next steps, we encourage you to keep in mind the communities, workers and families that would be hurt by a further disruption in the season,” the letter urges Bettman and Fehr.
One thing that fans have seen as a positive move by the elected representative from New Jersey is that they also mentioned that Congress has the authority to direct interstate commerce, including professional sports and will be keeping a hand on their affairs
from now on in order to ensure a smooth workflow.
Realising how major of a boost it was for the city of Newark, New Jersey after the Devils reached the Stanley Cup Finals just months back and now hockey is completely dead, the Senators are working towards mediating a deal between the two sides and want
it done soon.
While the lockout may have affected the entire nation and Canada as well, the Senators are terming New Jersey to have been hit the hardest and hope that the NHL and NHLPA will be able to get things back on track in time.
