US Senior Open: Tom Watson eager to bag another senior major title
The eight-time major and six-time senior major winner, Tom Watson now looks forward to adding another major title to his resume. He will tee off at the US Senior Open at the Indianwood Golf and Country Club, on Thursday, July 12, 2012.
Watson is one of the most successful golfers in the history of the game, winning a total of 70 professional tournaments.
He won the British Open five times in his career, including three in a four-year stretch, starting from 1980. He won the Masters Tournament and US Open twice and once, respectively.
The only major victory that he missed during his career was the PGA Championship. He came close to victory in 1978 but John Mahaffey carded a birdie on the second extra hole in the playoffs, leaving him behind tied for the second place.
Therefore, he failed to complete the major slam by just one stroke. However, he now aims the same level to be achieved on the Champions Tour.
He has won three of the five senior major titles, including Senior PGA Championship, Senior British Open and Jeld-Wen Tradition.
He came close to the US Senior Open victory thrice in his career. Yet, he never succeeded in taking the winner’s spot. "I've come close," Watson said Wednesday. "Come close a couple times”.
According to him, a victory in the events means a great deal to him, especially after finishing as the runner-up three times in his career.
"This event is a very special event to me," he said.
He is grouped with the US team captain for the Presidents Cup, Fred Couples, and amateur Douglas Snoap for the opening round on Thursday.
"I hope he goes away thinking he got a good break getting paired with us," Couples said. "I think he'll be more nervous than most guys. We're not going to try and make him more nervous. We'll talk to him and have fun with him".
While talking about the wrist injury that he suffered right after the Masters Tournament this year, he said that he was pleased with the quick recovery, allowing him to play the major with complete fitness.
