We have never been to these islands and are looking for opinions from people who have been there to see which is the nicest. Any suggestions on where to stay and what to do would be helpful too! Thanks! We are a family with 3 children under the age of 12.

  1. St. Croix.  Relaxing, quiet and if you have kids, you don't want to go somewhere very crowded.  Try staying in a child-friendly hotel where kids will have tons of activity and won't get bored. Buccaneer Hotel is a very good choice (expensive though). Enjoy!!!!

  2. I'm from st. croix and it is real beautiful and a good hotel would probly be buccaneer hotel because they have stuff for your little kids and for you guy the have lil camps and adults have spas beaches (snorkliling, swimming, boating)lots of activicties to attend on island period, or carambola but my friend been there ask her babii bri

  3. Hector gave you some good options for things to do.

Have you ever thought about renting a house/villa. We like it because it gives you more room and many come with plenty of amenities. Washer/dryer, pool, hot tub, towels, coolers, beach chairs, floats and all kind of goodies.

It saves you some money too. With kids, they are hungry and thirsty all the time. Eat breakfast at home, pack a lunch and most villa/homes have a grill to use for dinner. Or have dinner out.

With airlines charging for luggage these days, every one can pack lighter because you'll have that washer/dryer.

Also you can search on the web for villa/house rentals in the USVI, you will get plenty of links.

Good Luck. The USVI is a wonderful place for a family vacation.)

  4. We went on a sailing and snorkeling excursion on St. Thomas that was the best snorkeling we have ever done. Otherwise, St. Thomas is mainly about shopping and the entire group of islands is all about nature activities -- beachs, scuba, snorkeling, sailing, etc. There also are a handful of decent historical sites.

I agree with the other post that you should consider an all-inclusive if you have never been to the Caribbean before. There are many good choices to consider.

  5. I know you'll want to do lots of family activities. I suggest the following:

    1. Take an excursion on the Atlantis Submarine.

    2. Swim at Magen's Bay Beach.

    3. Ride the Paradise Point Tramway http://www.paradisepointtramway.com

    4. Take the whole family to eat at the Paradise Gate. They have an arcade there. ;)

    5. There's bumper boats, mini golf and games at the Sugar Bay Beach Resort.

    6. Visit the world famous Mountain Top. One of the best views on the island. http://www.greathouse-mountaintop.com/

    7. Stroll through historic downtown Charlotte Amalie. Lots of great shopping and restaurants.

    8. The Coral World Marine Observatory is a must visit! http://www.coralworldvi.com

    9. Take a ferry to St. John and check out Coral Bay, Trunk Bay, the St. John National Park, and the Annaberg Ruins.

    10. Get some of the best local food around at Cuzzin's on Backstreet.

    11.  Go on the Screaming Eagle Jet Tour or go parasailing.

    12.  Taking diving lessons  or if you don't want to go that far just yet, try out the submersible scooters

Where to stay really depends on your budget.  I think the most kid friendly hotels on the island are Bolongo Bay Beach Resort and Wyndham Sugar Bay.  Here are links to their sites:

  6. The island most geared toward tourism is St. Thomas.  St. Croix is mainly residential.  St. John is more natural and uncrowded with the absolute best beaches.  However, St. John hotels are very expensive.  I recommend staying on St. Thomas and renting a villa through McLaughlin Anderson (www.mclaughlinanderson.com).  However, if you prefer a hotel on your first visit try the Bolongo

    Bay.

Don't forget to take the short ferry ride to St. John for the fabulous beaches, including Caneel Bay.

  7. why you want to go there,, seeems so expensive, find a place that has all inclusive, try punta cana best hotels and beaches, great for kids mine loved it

  8. St. John is mostly National Park land - it is gorgeous.  But it doesn't have a lot of "resorts".  They do have tented campgrounds [Maho Bay and Cinnamon Bay - they have websites] that are pretty inexpensive, for USVI.

St. Thomas has more resorts and is more "touristy".  It's a big cruise-ship destination, with ships in port almost every weekday.  There are some family-friendly resorts there, e.g. Bolongo Bay.

Don't know about St. Croix, but the cruise ships stopped going there because of crime problems several years back.

Try getting a guidebook at your library or bookstore or try these websites:

    vinow.com

    TripAdvisor.com

HomeAway.com [on SJ many facilities are in the hills]

    Fodor's and/or Frommer's guidebook websites
