US Virgin Islands secures seventh spot in U-19 Continental Championship – Volleyball news
A 7/8 classification match of the NORCECA Boys’ U-19 Continental Championship took place between US Virgin Islands and French Saint Martin on Saturday, July 7, 2012. The venue of the competition was the Centro de Alto Rendimiento sports hall where the two
teams contested in front of an audience of 50 spectators. The match went on for four sets at the end of which US Virgin Islands secured the seventh position in the tournament.
The US Virgin Islands squad took a total of one hour and 37 minutes to earn the win at the following final set scores: 25-19, 25-22, 22-25 and 25-21.
The coach of the US Virgin Islands side, Mark Daniel, shared his views at the win by making the following statements, “We are very excited about this win, we came out with an attitude and good execution, but expected to do better and we are still a long
way to go.”
On the other hand, the team captain of the French Saint Martin side, Fresnet Fabre, expressed himself at the outcome of the match by making the following statements, “It was a good match I just want to congratulate Saint Thomas (Virgin Islands) for this
victory.”
Lakish Plante of French Saint Martin gave the following comment to share his feelings, “This was pretty intense for both of us.”
The top score of the match was 16 which was achieved by two players of the US Virgin Island squad. These two players were Aseah Thomas and Jordan Evans. On the other hand, the players with the maximum points from the French St Martin side were Stephane Morisseau
and Ashille Brooks, both of whom put up a score of 12 each. The two French St Martin players were helped by their team mate Kareem Brooks who added 11 points of his own.
The first set of the match started fairly level but as it progressed US Virgin Islands was able to grab the advantage. The French St Martin squad could not do much except to trail behind as the US Virgin Islands marched on to secure a comfortable opening
set win at 25-19.
The second set was more competitive than its predecessor as French St Martin was able to step up their game and get hold of the lead. However, US Virgin Islands did not let go of the chase and finally got the advantage for themselves before going on to bag
the second set at 25-22.
The French St Martin squad bounced back in the third set by avoiding a clean sweep and securing the set at 25-22 after an impressive show of volleyball skills. However, French St Martin could not make the energy last for the fourth set as US Virgin Islands
were able to take and keep the advantage till they had bagged the frame at 25-21.
